It says in Matthew:

While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, saying "What do you think of Christ?Who's son is he?" They said unto him, "the son of David." He said unto them, "How then does David in spirit call him Lord, saying, 'the Lord said unto my Lord:Sit thou on my right hand, till I make your enemies your footstool?' If David then called him Lord, how is he his son?" And no man was able to answer him a word, neither did any man from that day onward dare ask him any more questions.

This is an interesting question. What makes it interesting for me is that in Judaism, while being Jewish is passed down through the mother, one's *tribe* is passed down strictly through the father. Thus, without claiming that Joseph is his father I do not understand how Jesus could claim to come from the line of David. His mother's ancestry is immaterial in Jewish law. For example, if my mother's last name is Levi and my father's is Goldberg, I am **not** a Levite.

God never lies. He was challenging them.
The answer to Jesus' question about the identity of the Messiah was in a number or OT passages. See 2 Sam. 7:12-16, Ps 89:3-4, 34-36, Is 9:7, 16:5, 55:3-4. The Messiah would come from David's royal line.

Verse 43 quotes Ps 110:1, and describes Christ's presence in heaven until He comes to reign on earth . See Heb 10:11-13, Rev 3:21.

Psalm 110:1 uses 2 different Hebrew words for God. The 1st, translated Lord, is the name Yahweh, the proper name of Israel's God. The 2nd Lord means "Master" . David, the king of Israel, calls one of his offsprings "Lord" a title for deity

The Jews believed Christ would be the son of David…and he was he was the root of David as seen in Revelations:
(I am the root and the offspring of David) Revelation 22:16 I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.

Jesus was both the son of David as in the root of David and the son of God

i would be unable to be stricken to study all your information, yet Jesus did stay and die a training Jew. regardless of if, that he replaced into the Messiah isn't common with the aid of Judaism's standards of what the Messiah would be (in accordance to the prophecies interior the Tanakh), so if one worships him by using fact the Messiah, they're now no longer Jewish. they're Christian, as Christians have distinctive standards for his or her Messiah (as their "previous testomony" isn't the comparable by using fact the Tanakh). wish this helped. Peace.

Jesus challenged the false understanding of who Christ would be. He would not be only a human son of David, a military deliverer. This is evident from David's reference to Christ as "my Lord". In other words, Jesus was not saying He wasn't "the son of David" but that He was more than just the son of David and not a military leader.

this scripture answers the mystery of the incarnation. Jesus said that David who was speaking by The Holy Spirit said that the One who was David's Lord was also David's son. The genealogy of Jesus in Matthews gospel shows this to be the case. To be David's Lord and David's son He had to be God in human form whose ancestry was from the line of David.

No.

The Pharisees did not know that Messiah (Christ) was asking the question. That Christ was the living Word. That Christ was God, I AM THAT I AM. Which also means, I will be what I will be.
