right now back to 2001, you have to file it but if a refund is due you will not get it, because you can only receive your refund 3 years after the original due date.
you will not get refunds for 2002 and 2003 and as of April 15, 2007, you will not be able to get a refund for the 2004 tax year.

There is NO statute of limitations on unfiled taxes. The statute of limitations to collect taxes doesn't start until the return is filed.

For unfiled returns.....technically back to 1913.

As a matter of policy as stated in the IRS manual, unless IRS can show fraud, it will only go back six years.

If you didn't file, or filed but omitted a major portion of your income, there's no limit.

Seven years UNLESS you filed a fraudulent return,.. there is no statute of limitations on fraud.
