Who in their right mind thought a privatized military was a good idea?

The fact that there were armed contractors in Vietnam and Iraq seems to be completely lost on the uninformed. The 3,000 armed contractors in Iraq perform missions that our soldiers are not qualifed for or should simply not be performing. I don't want to see our soldiers put in harms way protecting foreign and Iraqi VIPs. The same with guarding supply convoys, which are operated by civilian companies. Since I have a son serving in Iraq, I gag when I read the uniformed tripe being posted by liberal's with no grasp of the realities of modern warfare. Using this ridiculous logic, we should have used military personnel to put out the well fires in Kuwait following the end of the Gulf War, even though they are not qualified.
Blackwater existed before Iraq. They will lay off people and downsize when the war ends. They function like any other business when it comes to manpower.

None of the above. Blackwater will probably end up working in Africa after Iraq. The African leaders who control the diamond mines have the need and the resources to make Blackwater an attractive option. It's been done in the past (hire Western mercenaries) with great effect. It was only after the mercs left that everything went back to chaos.

Blackwater already has several accounts in this country and abroad. Most missions are not the para military type you would expect. Neither is the mission they provide in Iraq. The mission they serve has the same duty description as the Federal Marshals or Secret Service. The military does not guard and transport SofS VIPs and I hope they never do.

As for private militaries (mercenaries), they have around for centuries.
