I've been working at a place for 1 1/2 years and finally asked for a review/raise. The review went fairly good, and I tried to point out a lot of things I contributed to our company (we only employee 4 people.) I have accumulated most of the responsiblities, and I feel like I bend over backwards to keep the place running. After 5 weeks of WAITING, I finally got my raise, and I am not very happy. The bottom line is I am looking for new job, but how can I let my boss know that I feel underappreciated?

Small company, is the boss actually so behind in his work that it took 5 weeks or was it just a lllooooonnngggg disapointing 5 weeks.
Did others recently get better raises? Are you positive they can afford to pay you more? So far how does the job market look out there, lots of jobs in your field, do they pay more and give you the same, better, or worse benefits than what you have now......
Do you hate your job or just feel bummed about small raise??
If and when you find a better job, with better pay, and better benefits, then when you have new job locked down, then you can tell your old boss/bosses why you decided to change.
Until then you will lose a lot being with out a job and with out a reference from them. The unemployment rate is hi, so for many even a bad job is better than no job......Step lightly especially if you live from pay check to paycheck as many do.

In the meantime, do your job, do it well but do not do anyone elses job for free. Even a small company should have a job description, if they do not, offer to make one and be sure to include everything you know is expected of you, just you......
just what you were hired to do...... bottom line is it protects you from having to carry the brunt of the work for same price as just what you were "hired" to do. If they ask you to take on more, then is the time to ask for more benefits if they can not afford a raise........
This will also help you make out your resume' for the future job.....
Good Luck

Look for another job and wait for a job offer. If you do get a better job offer than let your company know. One, they will choose offer you a better raise or two, they will let you go but you will have a better paying job in sight. I think it is better to go this route because of it tooks 5 weeks to get your raise-that is a little long!

Don't tell. You have to use your bosses reference as a recommendation if you leave on good terms.

Your boss probably won't get another employee like you again.
