I'm sure some of you saw the question the 16 year old posted about teaching her pitbull to attack people. This makes me so angry, does she even realize her dog isn't bread to hurt or kill, does she realize she is one of those responsible for giving pitt's such a bad wrap. People like her shouldn't be a pet owner! Who agrees?

(didn't finish the thought)
It is about ignorant 16 year olds (or anyone else for that matter) that don't know a thing about training dogs and only want them to attack people...totaly uncool

I absolutely hate those poeple! I own 2 pitties and they are not able to go places, do things that most other dogs do because of people like this creating BSL. You do not need to teach your dog to attack. My dogs would never attack anyone unless they were violently harming me and even then they areso trained I don't think they would bite just bark and growl. I try my hardest to make my dogs great ambassadors for their breed and people like this just ruin all my hard work!

I can't really answer this question very well, since I'm not a fan of teaching a dog to "attack" ... but I can say that both my dogs will sound an alarm at the first sign of anyone unfamiliar. I think it's pretty natural for a dog to defend its people and its home. And they don't need any special training for that! One of my dogs is an Irish Setter (pretty well-known for being the world's worst watchdog!) but he's territorial enough to bark like hell unleashed if he sees or hears something he doesn't like or recognize. My other dog, a Border-Collie mix, is a true home-security system. Nothing gets past her! So, I'm not sure if I answered your question. What I know is that a dog WILL bark and put up a good front if challenged. Studies have shown that ANY home with a dog is safer than one without ... and that any person out walking is safer with a dog. So, from that, I would have to infer that simply having a dog around makes you and your home safer. I'd never want to encourage aggression, but I don't think it's needed. A dog's bark is enough to scare off most intruders! And really, that is the goal, right? To keep ourselves, our loved ones, and our property safe!

I didn't see the question. However, I whole heartedly agree with the fact that idiots shouldn't own pets. Especially dogs. My dog will defend me (he is too quick to do so) but I work with him every day to try and curb this tendency. Encouraging a dog to attack is a horrible accident waiting to happen. The exceptions are those who compete in Schutzhund. Their dogs look at it as a game and it's treated like a game. Those people also know how to handle the dog and have experience in that particular field. Also those who train protection dogs. A professional trainer teaching a protection dog is a FAR cry different than your average pet owner teaching an attack command and not training anything else.

I didnt see that question altho i will def look, i a hoping she just means to protect her..but dogs that are loyal to you already do that. I teach my babies not to take food/treats from people or let them get too close to take them away as i would my own child, some people act weird to a dog doing things they wouldnt want their own child doing. Pitts are adorable and they are in the working class dogs, training a dog like that to do things that arent far from their nature can prove to be terrible, cuz the dog could then turn on the owner then what...I know my friend he rescued a cute blk pitt pup from an owner that was gonna train it to be an attacker..and i dont see why people would that. people look at me harsh when i rather people not reach out and touch my dogs when there are people out there training their dogs to bite those same hands. anyways back to the question, this girl needs to be taught better, because of that kind of ignorance, people are thinking of killing all pitts when they are the kindest of creatures

Dogs shouldn't be taught to attack by inexperienced people. This should be left for professionals - ie police officers training police dogs.
Stupid people like that are only going to end up with a vicious dog that they cannot control and a dog who will either a) attack them or b) attack and hurt someone else. And what does that mean? Lawsuit! And sadly, the poor dog being put down. So unfair to the dog!

Yeah i agree, it makes me really sad. Why fill these dogs with anger? They can be great loving pets and shouldn't be used for attacking people. People should treat them with love and respect and i'm sure they'll see the same in return from the dog.
I believe all dogs are great and it comes down to how they are treated and raised to what temperament they have. Unfortunately breeds like Pit Bulls seem to attract a certain type of owner (not all, but some) that gives the breed a bad name.

Having been dog lovers for many years, having a variety of breeds, including some that have strong personalities (i.e. Rottweiler), my wife and I are firm believers that no civilian should be allowed to have a dog they intend to "train to attack." In case of this sixteen year old, the irresponsibility hasn't started with her, it started with her parents letting her get the dog. Her case is headed for a terrible ending. Probably, with the Pitt Bull paying the ultimate price for it's owner's actions. I don't argue the fact that Pitt Bulls are more aggressive than other breeds. However, regardless of the breed, any dog can pushed to defend itself or it's owner and can become deadly. With dogs like Pitt Bulls and Rottweilers, special attention in their raising needs to be taken to balance their natural temperment with positive training. Most of all, love. Remember, dogs are just a few "evolutionary steps" away from their ancestors, wolfs, and have the same survival instincts still intact. Dogs cannot speak for themselves and they look to their owner for guidance. The results are either a well-behaved dog, or one that is always just on the edge of being out of control. Our advice to anyone looking to raise a dog is to do yourself and the dog a favor, LEARN ABOUT THE BREED before buying. As for this sixteen year old, someone needs to explain to her that, with enough love and care, her Pit Bull would be confident, happy, loving, and would naturally protect her and anyone else it gets close to without being "trained to attack."

I agree dogs shouldnt be trained to attack.APBT'S already have a bad enough name as it is.I love the breed,it's the only breed i'll own. I am a reputable breeder of the american pit bull terriers and the dogs that we have are trained to protect my daughters and i.Im not saying that we trained them to attack(they are very sweet dogs)but if anyone walks into my house with a gun they wont get threw the front door.If someone were to raise a hand to one of us they will sit in front of us and growl. If i say help they are right there by my side. When i say a certain command they know it's safe. But if you were to walk in the house they would lick you to death. Please dont take tis the wrong way as i know some will. There is a difference in protecting and attacking!

I agree with greekman to some extent - dogs are great workers as well; strong and reliable. However, it really gets me when people post here saying "how can I teach my doberman to attack on command?" I think people have this idealistic scenario in which they are being mugged and they can yell "Rover, get him!" and the Dobe will tear the mugger to shreds. I'm not suggesting that dogs can't do that, but this type of training is not for everyone to try.

I have to disagree with you on this. I import and train dogs for among many other things, serious protection work. Most people look at a protection trained dog and think of a wild animal that was trained to kill, however, I trust a protection trained dog more then the average house pet with all the nasty habits and unpredictability that comes with it.
A properly trained personal protection dog will not only bark but will engage an intruder on command or upon physical threat to his handler.
It gets tiring to hear that dogs are only supposed to be companions and not have a skill like personal protection.
