Okinawa is the southern most island in the chain of Japanese islands. It was the first and only battle on Japan itself. Okinawa is about 35 miles long and 4 miles wide. This was the largest invasion of World War 2, even larger than D-Day in Europe. More US casualties occurred in that battle then any other battle. The civilians on the island were told that the American forces would rape children and women and kill the husbands and boys. About half of those civilians went to the northern part of Okinawa and jumped into the ocean at what we now call Suicide Cliffs.

The battle of Okinawa is what convinced President Truman that over 1,000,000 casualties would occur if we attacked the home island. Therefore, he approved the dropping of the two atomic bombs. One week after the second one was dropped Japan surrendered unconditionally.

Operation Iceberg, the amphibious invasion of Okinawa, was done to get us closer to the Japanese homeland in order to carry out additional air bombardment missions against Japan. The prefectural capital of Okinawa (Naha) is less than six hundred miles from Tokyo, putting the Japanese capital well within range of our B-29 bombers.
Okinawa could also serve as a staging and marshalling base for Operation Olympic, the planned amphibious landing on Kyushu Island. That would have been the first step in U.S. land forces occupying Japan. However, the landing and occupation of Okinawa was the last such operation of that kind which we had to launch in the Pacific War in World War Two. Okinawa fell to U.S. forces in July of 1945. Less than one month later, we dropped two atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. On August 15th, the Emperor of Japan broadcast an Imperial Rescript which announced that Japan was surrendering. On September 2nd, on board USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay, Japan signed the Articles of Surrender.

There weren't any main causes of the battle. The battle was used for U.S. Military purposes in 1945. When the U.S. went to war with Japan, we devised a plan that called for invading all the islands that the japanese military controlled. The island of Okinawa was a major key for the upcoming invasion of the japanese mainland. Due to the nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, there was no further need to prepare for a battle on the mainland. For more information follow the mentioned link.

Okinawa was the last stronghold of the Japanese army outside of Japan itself. The Japanese had been eradicated from every Pacific Island except Okinawa, so by taking Okinawa the Japanese had nothing left.

Once Okinawa was captured, it was on to the Japanese mainland and ultimate victory !

The invasion and control of Okinawa was important so the U.S. could build hugh airfields there and then our B-29 Superfortress bombers to soften up the island prior to the invasion. After the invasion smaller craft could operate from the same airfields to provide troop movement and support. Okinawa was also close enough to be a foreward "jumping off" base to assemble troops, ships, supplies, arms, etc. for use prior to, during, and following the invasion. Once Kyushu was taken U.S. forces could then move up the mainland of Japan to Tokyo -- and victory.

I hope you are joking. But if you must know, there was this war back in the 20th Century called World War II. If you google (World War II, Okinawa) some information might pop up to help you out.
