They smoke cigarettes because it helps them in times of stress and they can't help it after tht; it becomes an addictive drug, but they think it's good since it helps relieve their stress. They become oblivious of the fact tht it could kill them.

Why People Smoke
Most people start smoking when they are in their teens and are addicted by the time they reach adulthood. Some have tried to quit but have returned to cigarettes because smoking is such a strong addiction. It is a habit that is very difficult to break. There are many different reasons why people smoke.
Three of the main reasons that young people smoke are to look mature, to be like their friends, and to experiment. Since teens see older people all around them smoking, especially their parents and relatives, they smoke to act older. If their friends or peers smoke, they may feel pressured into doing the same to be accepted. The last reason is the excitement of experimenting with something that is forbidden. In Massachusetts it is against the law for anyone under 18 years old to smoke. Usually parents do not allow their under age teens to smoke. Therefore, smoking becomes very attractive. It is exciting to get cigarettes and sneak away to smoke without being caught.
Adults smoke for other reasons. They may have a lot of stress and pressures because of economic and personal problems. They may be unemployed or working but not making enough money to take care of themselves and their families. They may be homeless, or they may be dealing with alcohol or cocaine/heroin addictions. Some may be in bad marriages or relationships in which there is physical and/or verbal abuse. All these people may smoke to feel relaxed or to give them energy while going through a hard time.
Whether young or old, some people smoke to control their weight. Smokers, on the average, weigh seven pounds less than non-smokers. Smoking reduces a person's appetite. It lessens his/her sense of taste and smell. This could be why ex-smokers gain weight after quitting cigarettes. Food tastes and smells so much better.
Finally, there are people who say they love to smoke. Smoking gives them pleasure. It just makes them feel good.
That's why.

Most the time people start smoking when they are very young. They get addicted and they have great difficulty getting free. This is a terrific site for anyone struggling with tobacco addiction. http://whyquit.com/ people who smoke think they have bad nerves and they need to smoke to help but actually the nicotine makes nerves get bad every time it starts to leave the system and cigarettes make people 's nerves worse and it takes so much away that they don't even know is missing if they have been smoking for years . Some people think it is impossible to quit for them. that's not true. Quitting is possible it is a little hard at first but it is possible and many people have quit.

For a very long time smoking has been perceived as cool. A few years back a study was done where people were shown pictures of people doing various things. In some of the pics the people were smoking and in some they were not. The participants were asked to determine which people were "cool." The majority of the time the smokers were thought to be more cool than the non-smokers.
Logically it makes no sense.

well my friend, second hand smoke doesn't cause lung cancer. at least not more than any other poor habit that people have (ie eating anything fried in oil) it's just the bad smell is all really..
having smoked for 5 years and quitting successfully, the original reason for trying was to spit in the face of parental authority. cutting my nose to spite my face as it were.. from then on, once i learned how to inhale, it was all about replicating that original light headedness.. there there is a period of time where you don't quite know why you smoke, but you seem out of place or fidgetty without one...in the end, the most compelling reason i found to smoke was that when I was with smokers, it sucked being the only one left inside, and if i was going to go outside, and 3 people were going to offer you one, well you might as well take a few puffs..
the best reason to have smoked was to have quit. i hold quitting as a high achievement in my life. wrestling with my own addictive personality and winning. other than that, cigarettes can fck off

They thought it would make them feel better, forget their problems. In effect, they're actually creating a problem, nicotene addiction, leading them 2 their death.
Some people think one won't hurt, but this becomes an addiction. Once u start smoking, alcohol, drugs, weed, marajuana, cocaine, pod, etc u cannot quit.
So have the willpower 2 b politely discrete in leaving a room with smoker/s, etc. Second, or passive, smoking is worse than the danger 4 the smoker. Most importantly, don't give in 2 peers in middle or high-school who encourage u 2 take drugs, alcohol, pod, weed, cocaine, marajuana, etc. Say no!

I'll tell you what~ I have smoked cigg's off and on for at least 35 years. When my health turned bad and all of a sudden~ Im breathing in air and its NOT going to my lungs to give me Oxygen~ ITS A HUGE FREAK OUT! When I was smoking weed~ it made me feel like i was not in control of myself and I felt very paranoid. It was like being awake in a living hell for me. I only smoked weed for less then 1 year. But there are times I still miss the peace and calmness of smoking a cigg. but I dont want to ever experience that loss of air in my lungs ever again. I never have cared an iota about the cancer from the ciggs~ its the loss of oxygen. I guess you'll have to read what I wrote, and delete my answers because I could NEVER ever prefer either any longer~ yrs ago, it would have been the cigg. though.

I am 28 yo. In high school, I started smoking Kools because I liked the "head rush" I got off them . Before I knew it , I was addicted. I have quit once for about a month, then started again.
We have a son that turns 4 in March, and I know its not an excuse, but me, hubby , and any guests come over, we go out side on either back deck / fenced in yard or front portch to smoke. And if our son is in the vehicle , we dont smoke.
We have also been addicted to prescription pain meds (started out with lighter ones like Tylenol 3 and Lortab) Before we knew it , we had to have the pills to just feel "normal" it wasnt EVEN about a buzz anymore. Also, the pills got stronger and took more as our tolerance went up. We never did herion, we live in such a small town there is one gas station, one grocery store, no "chain"restaurants like McDonalds, etc. Anyway, we started doing OxyContin, Percocet, Fentanyl patches, morphine 'suckers",etc.
Have you tried writing to or talking your local govt. a bout banning smoking? I know they will kill me, my Papaw was in the Korean War as a Pathfinder in the 82nd Airborne. After the tought life he led, lung cancer is what killed him. And even though I know all this, we continute to smoke.

We were stupid when we were young and started smoking and now we are hooked.
Although we did not have all the bad things about smoking shoved in our faces like they do now.
Smokes were cheap when I was young. They were around 45 cents a pack, so really cheap and both of my parents smoked, and all of my aunts and uncles smoke, so I guess I was destine to smoke.
Although I do not know why kids would start smoking now, with all there is out there about how bad it is for you.
Don't Start Smoking
Good Luck

Regardless the reason some starts smoking (and there are as many reasons as there are people that smoke), cigarettes contain a number of addictive compounds that compel the smoker to continue smoking (even when they know its unhealthy).
But there are things many people do that are unhealthy but they do them anyway without any addictive compounds.
People eat burgers when they know the fat, starch, hormones, and beef are unhealthy.
People eat potato chips when they know the fat and salt are unhealthy.
People drink alcohol when they know it is unhealthy for the liver (and their driving record if they drive under the influence).
People remain in abusive relationships when they know they should get out.
People eat pork and bacon when they know its one of the worst foods for long-term health.
And there are others.
Congratulations on not smoking. That is something that many smokers wish they could say.
