I know that Jr. is voted the most popular, but could it be that because of his father that he is the name that most non-nascar fans remember. Ask a non-fan to name a driver...chances are they wont be able to name five and in that group of five, they will say Jr., even though they know nothing about him.

Because his last name is Earnhardt, is exactly why he is the most popular. Looks, being single and having a huge bank account dont hurt either.
His father had the largest fan base while alive, but Bill Elliott was voted Most Popular almost every year.
Dale Sr is still #4 in souvenir and memorabilia sales, six years after his untimely death. More than Gordon.

Okay alot of this probably has to do with his name even I will admit to that...Alot of it is the media they started on him even when his dad was still alive.. He has been the bud #8, fans associate that with him, he use to win races until the cars he was driving went to total crap...Young and old love him, he happens to be a very nice, humble guy...Also its marketing, endorsements, you can find Dale jr items everywhere and I mean every where, the same with Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart as well. There is a site that people vote on for their favorite driver every yr, you can vote everyday for your favorite driver from Sept to 11-19 every yr..I think T-bone has the site there listed in his post... I haven't voted everyday, but there are people who do.. Jr also happens to have a very good business mgr, his sister Kelley has done a bang up job...If every one thinks he is every where now....Just wait till next yr, and if he has a great season at HMS, you have not seen nothing yet... He is my favorite driver and I hope he does great next yr...

I know Bill Elliott kept winning it every year, until 2001 he asked his fans to vote for Earnhardt instead in tribute to him. Classy guy, that Bill is.
Still don't explain how Earnhardt's son manages to win that but not win any races.
