Are you telling me god can command the entire universe, but he can't command my attention?

Not surprisingly, you're all completely missing the point. The omnipotent master of the universe should be able to make me hear him... if he really wants to be heard.

Jesus (God) spoke many times in scripture and used the phrase"those with ears to hear". Everyone was listening but few heard.

God has created, is running, and will destroy the Universe. God is the Origin and Destination of the Universe. God was, is, will be everywhere, God was never Created and will never die / be destroyed. God is beyond Life and Death. All religions of world teach human way to get close to God. You give your Best, God will give thy Best. Ask God for help and forgive, God will help and forgive you. Pray; Worship and Thank God for everything. Remember wherever there is Happiness in Life, there will be Sorrow. To get Happiness, you must master Sorrow. For Success in Life; Believe in Self and God, Learn from Past, Concentrate in Present, Plan for Future. Have control on, be the master of, not the slave of your body, senses, and mind. Purpose of this Life is to Gain and Share utmost Knowledge and Experience to differentiate and choose Right, Good, God against Wrong, Bad, Devil. Set your Desire level perfect or OK to be brave, no low to be coward, no high to be cruel. You have rights of Survival, Self Defence, and Freedom.

Something to magnify your point a little bit....The reason for the great flood...God lost patience with ALL of mankind for their insistent wickedness, that in frustration he destoyed everything and started over. with just ONE guy and his family.

So, yes..there is significant evidence that gods "volume" is ..well...very limited.

so much so that apparently, out of the thousands that were on the Earth...only one guy was hearing him.

The flood is proof that god has limitations to his powere and influence.

either that or the story was made up by man.

if I were a God...destroying my entire people wouldnt even occur to me (aside from the fact that it goes against every fibre of my being..and as a God..why would I have created a situation that was going to fail anyway)...I would be more inclined to change my strategy or do something monumentally convincing....I mean if I can appear to one guy, perform a miracle for him, or effect him in some significant manner that he changes his lifestyle ( many examples of this in the scriptures) ..then I surely should be able to to do this on a global scale...I'm GOD for pete sakes!

When God speaks its like hearing your own conscious. It is easy to confuse the two. The best way to tell the difference is to think about the answer. If its just and right then its God if not....well then it is probably just you. trust me you will know when it happens.
I know this is a round about answer i think you are really asking why doesn't God just say HEY YOU in a big booming voice. If he did and he told you what to do he would be taking away your free will.

kind oh know what you are feeling to a point......... I went thru a point in life where I questioned God, but then walked away learning that He is consistent... unchanging.... my heart however wanders all over! He wants the best for me and I have to be the one to follow.......... you see sometimes it is hard to understand if He is talking to you or not sometimes but if you really want what He wants for you then open your heart and ears and listen....... you will know the answer...... if His answer is no.... go with it.. you will be better off..... if He remains silent and you feel nothing yet, be okay with that... sometimes He says "wait"....... "not now"......... He is not weak! We are...........like it or not.. He controls and the sooner we realize that we are better off following Him fully the better off we will be! Happy praying!

From a Christians point of view...
One day I was in an auditorium of people when someone behind me sneezed. I recognized the sneeze instantly, it was my mother's. I knew her sneeze because I knew her. I also know her voice. When she calls she doesn't need to announce herself. As soon as she talks I know who it is.

Jesus said, "The one who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. The one who guards the door opens it for him. And the sheep listen to the voice of the shepherd. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he brings all his sheep out, he goes ahead of them, and they follow him because they know his voice." and then, "I am the good shepherd. I know my sheep, and my sheep know me, just as the Father knows me, and I know the Father. I give my life for the sheep. I have other sheep that are not in this flock, and I must bring them also. They will listen to my voice, and there will be one flock and one shepherd. " (John 10:2-4,14-16 NCV). (It goes on to say that the people who heard Jesus say this called Him crazy and demon possessed - to be fair)

Sometimes we do not hear God because we do not know Him.

A great example is the case of Samuel and Eli in 1 Samuel 3.
In this account Samuel is a boy and was lying down in the temple. God called out to him but he did not know it was God so he kept going to Eli saying, "Here I am, you called me." To which Eli responded, "I did not call, go back and lie down."
The third time this happens Eli figures out that it is God calling Samuel so he gives the boy instructions to listen. The key to this story is in verse 7, in explaining why Samuel did not recognize God's voice, the scriptures say, "Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord: The word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him."

I'd also like to mention Hebrews 1:1-2, "1In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. "
We have Christ's words written down in the gospels.
Before Christ left His disciples He promised them that the Holy Spirit would come to be a Counselor and guide (See John 14:25-27 & 16:5-16). That promise is kept in Acts chapter 2 when the Spirit came to the Apostles. One of the Apostles, Peter then spoke to the crowd that had gathered. The hearers were "cut to the heart" and asked, "Brothers, what shall we do?" Peter replied, " 38Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call."
The promise of God's Holy Spirit is ours too if we also do what these verses say (repentance and baptism).
I could go on, but I think this answers the question.

How arrogant of you to try to tell God what to do.
God gave you free will and if you choose to not listen then God will judge you for that. You will see...

i do not think anyone can truly answer your question as to why he does not speak to us directly. he does speak to us through his word. the folks in the old testament did not have his word to live by as we do. if you give yourself to God and ask him to prove himself he will. I was saved before i believed completely. my advise is to ask him to speak to you. God does not need to speak as we do. trust me, he does speak to me, the more i follow his word and believe in him, the more i can hear the Holly Spirit.

Quote---If God gave us indisputable evidence of His being, we would have no need for faith. Faith is the essence of things we may never see.
