a girl who takes the same class as me, but on different day gave me the prompt for the essay we were about in class..is that considered cheating..

Yes, in a way..because you already know what will be asked on the test. You will still have to do the studying and get the answer yourself though. Just makes things a little easier, where everyone else in the class is studying up on everything. You are not in trouble, and im sure your not the only person who has done this. If you feel guilty about it, its probably the wrong thing. Learn and don't do it again in the future. Good luck on the test!

I would consider it cheating since you had an advantage over all the other students. You had time to consider and select ideas that the others did not have.
You did wrong. Now the teacher is the one to say if you are in trouble or not. If I were the teacher, I would give you a zero. And another prompt, and maybe only 70% of the actual grade you would earn from the second prompt.
Learn from this honey bun. And tell your friend to keep her big mouth shut!
