They are attractive, robust, intelligent and playful dogs who make good companions and are generally good with children. Standard Schnauzers are medium sized, making them fine for the apartment or for a yard. They are very clean, have good habits and aren't particularly interested in wandering away from home. They are devoted to family and will strive to protect them. They are alert, spirited and eager to please. The Standard Schnauzer is loyal and very intelligent, and is accustomed to being the watchdog and guardian. They are not trustworthy with smaller animals, however, due to their high prey drive. They do get along well with other dogs and pets of the same size, however. In the past, some Schnauzers have been known to "watch over" children in their spare time. Schnauzers are more of a one-person dog, but can be accustomed to a family. Upbeat and obedient, the Standard Schnauzer makes a delightful little companion with a size that is "just right".

In my experience.. (I've lived with Schnauzers my whole life..) it's a toss up.. We've had one that hated kids (other than my brother and I) .. we've had some that were great with kids.. One that was nervous around them.. but who never did anything to them.. and the one that we were told NEVER to allow next to a child.. turned out to be the best of all of them.. (we got him from the pound.. we were his last shot.. he "attacked" several kids in other homes) When my nephew was born we made sure his smell was around the house... we never left the dog alone with him, but he was allowed near the dog.. the only time he even growled at him was one time when my nephew pulled his tail as the dog was eating.. (I dont' know who was watching him at that point, but they were going over to keep him away from the dog..just missed by seconds .. he was in his 2's I think) My nephew is now 8, and the dog is 11.. never been a problem.

Socializing is important.. but schnauzers are all unique.. each one has it's own quirks..

Every dog is different, but the two min. schnauzers I've had have both been fabulous with kids. And they were raised/lived in a no kid home. My old girl is 14 now, and my vet's little girl is 2 1/2. Jill is sooooo tolerant. She'll very gently come up and stand and let that little girl hug and squeeze and pet on her, and her tail's wagging the whole time. Of course, we never leave them unsupervised, don't want any accidents caused by unsupervised exhuberant child, but in a supervised environment, I've found them to be excellent.

I'd say that if they are raised with them that they are "ok." If you introduce them to a family without it ever having been around kids they will probably get used to it. I'm sure it's better if they are raised around little kids. A schnauzer is a terrier and if it feels threatened it will probably fight to defend itself so I would avoid leaving the kids alone with one until you knew you could trust it. Remember, every dog ,even if they are the same breed, is different.

little dogs usually have some trouble with kids, make sure you teach your kids about small dogs. unless you plan to get a giant schnauzer. little kids tend to be a little bit rough on little dogs. just as long as you feel they can handle it then almost any dog would be good. i must have to say that Schnauzers make beautiful dogs.

I'm a groomer, and from what I've seen, they are great family dogs. They don't mind noise a bit, they can handle accidental rough treatment without biting in retaliation, and they are very loving and energetic.
