I have a driver's license from maryland...I am getting a car in BC Canada- I will be an international student... I'm totally at a loss as to what the process for me to get my car insured will be...Can I get it insured but keep the license from MD? Do I need to be a resident to have it insured? I won't be recieving the study permit until after I get the car (because of when the school admits students into the program I will major in.)

If you're going to be there for along time (a year or more) it may be worth it getting a new icence. Usually, insurance companies prefer for you to get a local licence. You can still keep your MD licence, but get a BC licence too. The reason is it is easier for them to track people down if anything bad happens. Insurance will cost you more with MD licence, if possible at all.

There is nothing stopping you buying and insuring any car - even if you are not qualified to drive it at the time. All you need insurance for is to be able to keep it on the road - not necessarily drive it. Once you get behind the wheel and attempt to drive it without being accomanied by a fully qualified driver ( 21+ & at least 3 years experience ) you will be breaking UK traffic laws. Your best bet is to stick the 'L' plates on then take & pass a manual driving test, then you have the best of both worlds.
