You can no longer show up at the dock on the day the ship leaves and get a cabin. Prior to September 11, 2001 this was possible. Now it is not because the cruise lines have to submit the passenger list 72 hours in advance.

The latest you can be sure to get a cruise ticket is about 3 days before sailing. If you are looking for a great deal, find a travel agent and tell them what you are looking for and when you can travel and how much notice you need.

You don't. Security requires time to process all passengers before sailing.
