During and the day after drinking i get depressed and down - why is this? Its not everytime i drink, so its getting to the point where i think perhaps i should just not drink at all to avoid feeling like that. Why does it have this effect on me and not others? I have been treated for depression in the past, but havent been for at least 2 years now.

I know you may have heard this before but I'll say it again, alcohol IS a natural depressant. Once it gets into your bloodstream (and that's where it always ends up), it flows to your organs, including the brain and spine, and slows down the body's natural processes.

In your case, in addition to slowing down your body's processes, it might be also be resulting in the feelings of depression you're experiencing. Since each individual's chemical process is different, maybe this is the way your body reacts to the alcohol in your system. You know how there are funny and angry drunks?

I'm not sure how much alcohol you're drinking since you didn't specify. Maybe you're not experiencing the depression when you drink less? Or maybe when you drink wine as opposed to hard liquor? If you are/were seeing a doctor for the depression, you may want to mention it so that they can keep an eye on things.

It has been said your true feelings come out when you drink; therefore, I think you are depressed but are dealing with it when you are not drinking. Alcohol is a depressant and reduces your inhibitions to the point your depression comes out. You may also feel depressed because you think you drank too much or lost control. Maybe now would be a good time to talk to the Doctor who treated your depression in the past. You may need a prescription and while you are there ask the Doctor if you can have a drink with the medication. Drinking in moderation will most likely be OK. I have been living happily with depression in my past and you can too. In going forward always remember to be nicer to you than anyone else. When you treat yourself right, life is a more pleasant and enjoyable journey. Good luck. Doug

Hi there.

I used to drink often when I was in college and for years afterwards. Usually for me, I would feel worst about 3-5 o'clock the next day. I also suffered with anxiety and depression.

Let me share with you what worked miracles for me. I started taking a daily dose of fish oil. Unless you've tried it yourself, you won't believe how powerful the anti-depressant effects are. I'm telling you the stuff really works. I posted my whole story on a website. If you want the link, send me an email. My story is very similar to what you say you are experiencing.

Now, I can drink like I did when I was in college without feeling so anxious and depressed the next day.

IF YOU CANT STOP DRINKING SWITCH FROM WHAT YOU NORMALLY DRINK TO A LIGHTER ALCOHOL CONTENT, IF YOU NORMALLY DRINK WINE SWITCH TO BEER BUT REMEMBER NOT TOO MUCH.
BUBBLY DRINKS (AS BEER) GIVES A QUICKER BOOT AN DOES NOT HANGOVER TO BAD
ADDING LEMONADE TO FLAT WINE GIVES A BUBBLY EFFECT
GOOD LUCK
