I did most of what they recommend.
It worked very good for me.
It takes forever, but hey, the weekend is coming and you've got nothing else to do, right?

Well, I need more info, can you e-mail me?. Or at least (edit) your question?, add your system, (windows xp)?, is avg a firewall too, otherwise, you need to disk clean, and defragment. Turn off your Internet, run avg again, or any anti-virus, and anti-spy-ware, then CLICK ON START, All programs, Accessory's, system tools, disk clean, clean C, then start over, start, all programs, accessory's, system tools, but this time click on disk defragment, defragment C, then start over, and clean C again, you can do all over for D if you like, but this should take care of your problem, it takes awhile if this is the first time you are doing this so be very patient, also sounds like Avg doesn't have a firewall on your computer for a fire wall got to (www.zonelabs.com) and download a free 15 trial of (zonealarm Internet security suite) it contains a firewall, then whether you decide to buy it or not it turns in to a free firewall at the end of the 15 day's, this will keep the pop ups out, and the slowness too.

Adding more RAM will help speed up general performance IF its due to lack of memory. But ifthe problem lies with your drive , for instance if its loaded with too much junk/ infected with malware etc, it could still be slow. Try clearing your cache and also analyze the drive for fragmentation. A highly fragmented drive retards speed and can slow down almost every operation and its important to keep this under check. From what you say, about programs opening slow, it looks like symptoms of fragmentation.

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies.
