I don't think religion's only purpose is to explain the unknown. It's a guide, or a resource. Kind of like this question, seeking an answer. Everyone lives their own religion.

I agree with that.
Religions were stories that were byproducts of astrotheology. People used the skies to tell them everything from the time to when they should plant crops. Naturally they made up stories for the constellations.
Stories that we could relate to.
Even now...the story of the Bible, traces back to astrotheology(observation and knowledge of the celestial bodies)

If that were the case, religions would be in their peak with increasing ignorance in the world. Don't you know that more you think you know, less you know about the truth? I believe there is more wide spread ignorance in this world than when people thought the world was flat.

Well, history sure seems to say that. We look at outdated religions and say "look at those ignorant people, they just came up with religions and Gods to explain things they didn't understand." Yet we fail to think about what people in the future will think of our religions. They will most likely say "some people actually didn't accept evolution? And thought that this Jesus character was in their grilled cheese sandwich?"

Jesus himself had things to say against organized religion to some extent. I'm a believer who believes in science as well. The smartest person living a few years back was able to prove that God existed, mathematically. Ever hear of such a thing? To me things are very clearly set up for us. I mean how many types of awesome fruit and food do we really need? So very great.

I began looking at religion that way since I was about 15. That's one of the reasons I'm an atheist.

Human beings still aren't that knowledgeable about life.
I guess that explains why there is still so much faith in the world.

Organized religion obviously evolved from earlier tribal folk religions.
