My mom has been working at a Hometown Buffet in Californa for two years getting paid the minimum wage $7.75 or so. is this right? Can she do something about it. She has not gotten a raised for her performance it's not like she doesn't have papers she is a U.S Citizen. She never calls in sick, according to other co-workers she is very hard working lady, and when ever they need her on her day off she goes in. According to her manager everyone should be getting a raise at the begining of this coming year, but what about her performance doesn't this company give any raises for employee performance or every year. Can you advise if there is something she can do? Can she get fired for asking for raise? She has already asked the manager from the store and it seems he has no clue. Does anyone know how this company works. I feel this is not RIGHT!!! Can she ask someone else other than the Store Manager? Thank You ALL....and please don't say just to look for another job at her age (59) it's hard.

Sorry Lulu, but she might wanna look for another job. A company has no obligations to give raises. Shes lucky to even have a job in this bad times. I would ask her manager for a raise, she wouldn't get fired for asking, and she just may get it. Good luck

She can ask for a raise, and no she should not be fired for doing so. But, unless she gets promoted to Assistant Manager or something else it doesn't sound like they are going to pay her more than minimum wage at that restaurant. Her only choice would be to maybe look at working for a different restaurant or talk to the owner or someone above the managers head. There is nothing, legally, she can do to make them pay her more per hour as long as they are paying her the state minimum wage and/or the federal minimum wage.

Completely wrong. I have been working in the hotel business for less than 2 years and my raises have amounted to a dollar and eighty two cents. I am not very sure what the laws her, but she definitely should not let anyone or any company take advantage of her hard work. I am sure that since working there, she has developed some skills that might do her better in another setting. Considering her age, she is NOT too old to look for a different job. I am now working for a company where middle class people young and old have grouped themselves together to make way more money that a small 7.75 an our. If you want I can send you some info about this company. There is actually a large sector of this company in California who can help her reach her financial goals. Just email me at goldmember_ppl@yahoo.com. I am very sure that she will find this more satisfying.

If she wants to continue this job, but put some fire on their behinds, she might want to get a lawyer. There is a company called PrePaid Legal. I use the company myself and it has been such a blessing to me. I only pay $36 a month. I am able to call a large successful law firm in my state and any state all over America. They answer questions like the question you have and much more. I know the question my seem small or petty to call a lawyer, but this is very important to her future. If you want some contact information about that company, then send an email. I can send you the brochures that helped me make the decision to choose this company.

I wish your mother luck in her pay raise. I hope I have helped in any possible way.

There's nothing she can do. There are no guarantees that ANY employer will EVER offer their employees raises. This is just one of the things they sometimes do to be nice. The only way to guarantee that everyone gets a raise every year is to make this a Socialist society, which I don't think is gonna fly.

She can't get fired for asking for one...but it sounds as if she has already received the answer. If they're going to issue raises for everyone next year, then that's when they're going to issue raises.

FYI, my employer goes through the raise process every year - but each manager has the discretion to manage their own budget, so it's possible and probable that some didn't get any raise the last time around. And unfortunately, there is absolutely nothing to be done about it.

It is what it is, unfortunately.

I left my last job because I didn't get a raise for 5yrs. I had been with the company for 13yrs and had already reached my max but thought I at least deserved a cost of living raise.

WHy doesn't your mom go apply elsewhere. I hear that at In N Out the employees get paid $9 or more an hour.
I'm not familar with the restuarant industry so I do not know if it is right or not.

GOOD LUCK

It depends how the economy is moving and affecting the business. If in the span of 7 years, the business expanded and grew more profitable year over year, the 2 raises would be unfair. But if the companys is status quo or losing, the raising twice would be reasonable. You need to consider as well other fringe benefit that you are receiving which as you have mentioned is the rent which you are subsidised.

Well it sounds like exploitation to me!! Sorry to say. Only, I live in Canada, so maybe that stuff is actually legit down south. I would suggest just asking for a raise. There shouldn't be any harm in asking as long as she's polite and respectful. If that doesn't work, I'd suggest calling the labour board in your area to find out what exactly is legal with regards to annual reviews etc. Times may be tough, yes, but if we always settle for less, than less is all we'll ever get!

Good luck to Momma!

No Lulu. She works at a job that requires no skill. Tell her to ask for a raise but they wont give her one because they can hire someone else to do the same work.
