The whole world cannot be prosperous - there's too many people, not enough resources, and none of us ever learned to share. Right now, the developed world buys (or steals) the best that the world has to offer, in another few generations - as our population grows to 10 billion - we're going to see a lot more resentment - the only thing we'll share is war.

A very nice concept but unfortunately one that would be an end to the world itself.
At the risk of sounding apocolyptic, I firmly feel that you senerio would mean many VERY bad things for the US and the rest of the developed world.
1. The price of fuel would go up so high that it would be unaffordable for everyone. The reason is simply demand. We are seeing the results right now in our high prices for gasoline and metal and China demands more of these products and they are still 3rd world. If they had the money they would demand more of these limited demand things. Yes we would shift to alternative fuels like solar, wind, tidal, etc. but that would take decades.
2. All other limited supply items like fresh water, land and food costs would rise much faster then unlimited supply items. The problem is that the things we MUST have are in limited supply.
3. Population increases. If the rest of the world had a higher standard of living they would in turn most likely reproduce at a much higher rate then they already are. This would just put more pressure on limited resourses like land, energy food and fresh water supplies.
Yes it would stave off some problems with immigration. It would still hinge on how much in the way of social services is offered - if a country gives too much away in social programs they will still be faced with a flood of immigrants who want that benefit. But the resulting lowering standard of living is one result.
EDIT: I love how james b above me thinks that we need to be like china and india. If you like their standard of living james then I suggest you visit and see why they are experiencing a economic boom. It is because they have no laws pertaining to employee rights, pollution emissions, product safety, or anything else that protects their citizens.

It's a matter of relative prosperity, I suppose. If all the world were prosperous our destitute, and opportunities were about the same everywhere, then emmigration for economic reasons wouldn't occur.
Some of us might still be concerned about immigration. For instance, CA has a nice climate, and that attracts way too many people, even before you factor in our comparatively strong economy.

If the whole world was prosperous immigration would be a big deal, except we would be competing with each other to attract immigrants. Immigrants are a necessity for an economy to grow, unless we all decided to start having large families like 5-6 kids. Notice the countries in the world that are experiencing the best economic growth.. China, India, Indonesia all have one thing that we lack in the West LABOR when their labor runs out their growth rates will drop from the current 8-10% GDP/ year to where we are arround 3%

variety one must be the Bob Woolmer affair. it rather is the worst controversy with daytime 2d. at the back of this can be the making a raffle scandal that erupted in India. This observed 2 present day captains (India and SA) and previous Pakistan captain outed for matchfixing. The West Indian attempt experience that had to be moved to a various floor because of very undesirable pitch. The India/SL ODI being deserted because of situation of the pitch. Zimbabwe being banished from attempt cricket because of the fact of that government's policies and human rights themes. 5 will do me. I rather have disregarded various video games and gamers as human beings might desire to locate fault or controversy because of the fact their group lost.

Most of our illegal immigrants are from Mexico. Mexico is very prosperous. Most of it's people are not. If all Mexican's were prosperous, then I wouldn't care much about illegal immigration.

Dugh? People basicly want to survive and have their basic needs met....do that and they don't leave. Talk to the GOVERNMENTS of those people who won't do that and we may have an answer.

Like I said before
open the border
then, it won't be so glamorous/a hot topic
Then, we can focus on the REAL border problem,
and it ain't TX/Mex
We can monitor more closely once Mex becomes part of the US
