Let me first of all start off by saying that I absolutely hate Matt Serra. Just the sound of his voice drives me crazy! With that being said I have to say that no matter how much I hate him I think he will beat Matt Hughes. I think he wants it more. To prove that GSP wasn't a fluke. And after he beats Hughes they will give GSP a crack at him again and GSP will beat Serra like he should have done in their first match up. I am not sure how many of you noticed but when Serra caught GSP it was almost directly to the back of the head.

This is an interesting fight for all the wrong reasons.
On paper, if Hughes is smart, I don't see how he can lose. He is so much stronger than Matt Serra that this fight is laughable. He can pick up Serra slam him and elbow him for 25 minutes and likely never get subbed.
That said, the Matt Hughes of late, save the fight with Lytle, wants to K.O. people and his striking is terrible. Matt Serra has talked enough trash that Hughes is going to want to smash him stanidng. Should that happen, Serra is a heavy-handed fighter with a good chance to put Hughes down.
It depends if Hughes wants vengence or the belt. If he wants the belt first and foremost, it is pretty much his but he'll have to check his ego to win convincingly.

Good question. A year or so ago I would say Hughes with a lot of surety. However, Hughes has himself said that he has not trained properly for his last few fights and I have to believe that along with his motivation and heart just may not be into it like it once was. This along with Sierra and him defeating GSP, which was no easy task, makes for an interesting match-up with a lot of dynamics. All that along with their feelings for one another and I know I am going to be sitting there in front of my high def, fifty inch television enjoying the fight.

agree with you...I think Hughes retires from fighting after beating serra then losing to GSP...or maybe his 3rd and final fight would a 185 title shot

like the first guy said, if hughes uses his head he will use his ground and pound and should dominate, if he is stupid it could be a close fight do to serra's heavy hands, also serra could catch hughes in a sub unless hughes gets past the guard during the takedown (like he used to do)

When I was asked to sit down and write an article about who I thought would be the Welterweight Champion after December 29th I found myself at a crossroads. At UFC 79 newly crowned welterweight Champ Matt “the Terror” Serra will have his first title defense against the most dominate Welterweight Champion in UFC history, Matt Hughes. Not only is this going to be a tough fight to predict, I almost don’t know who I will be rooting for.
Both fighters have had a lot of air time on SpikeTV and myself and other viewers have gotten a chance to see who these fighters really are. Since the airing of the Ultimate Fighter 4 Matt Hughes has lost more fans than Tim Sylvia. Not only does he appear to be completely full of himself (in the latest season of TUF he went as far as to compare himself to biblical figure Ester who saved her people from destruction), but consistently gives people the impression that he is superior to them. I’ve read countless accounts of fans meeting Hughes and asking for autographs only to be either turned down or treated as though they were a Jehovah’s Witness passing out literature.
Matt Serra isn’t exactly the most likeable guy himself. While he garnered many fans with his in your face attitude and unapologetically telling Hughes what the rest of the world is thinking, he is also the recipient of many complaints that he should not be wearing the title belt. Its hard to respect a guy who was given a title shot after winning a reality show where he only defeated other fighters who were so bad they had previously left the UFC, and in his final fight at the seasonal finale there was quite a bit of controversy as a good number of viewers felt Serra’s opponent Chris Lytle should have won the decision victory. Of course there are also those bitter St. Pierre fans such as myself who are simply upset about the loss of “their champion”.
Many don’t feel Hughes even deserves a chance to regain his title after such a poor performance against Lylte, and many feel his celebration after St. Pierre was TKO’d by Serra goes to show he does not want another piece of Georges and is jumping at the opportunity to take on a lesser opponent. But regardless of what anyone thinks, the fight will take place.
So where do these fighters stand? Serra is currently 9-4 coming off the biggest fight of his career, a TKO of former Champion Georges St. Pierre, he previously won a very close decision against Chris Lytle precluded by a unanimous decision loss to Karo Paryisan. Hughes is coming off a lackluster win over Chris Lytle, his first fight since losing his title to GSP. He is widely considered the most dominate UFC Champion in history and is surely a future hall of famer. He was previously thought to be indestructible but his recent fights have been less than spectacular, despite avenging a loss to BJ Penn he was dominated for the majority of the fight and completely outclasses by St. Pierre. His most recent fight nearly put me to sleep as he was unable to finish an opponent he clearly had the advantage over.
So who will come out on top, this is really a hard prediction to make. If the fight were to stay standing I would defiantly go with Serra, Hughes has failed to show any improvement in his stand-up while Serra has proven to have heavy hands after his recent victory and though he lost the fight he still dropped Karo and nearly finished him as well. But on the ground it’s a pretty even match-up. Hughes is clearly the better wrestler and with this I give him the advantage on the ground, his superior ability to gain position will mean Serra will spend most of the fight on his back. Although Serra is widely known for his submission abilities he hasn’t been all that successful from his back, his short arms and legs will make submissions more difficult and of course we are taking about Matt Hughes here, his submission defense is nearly flawless expect maybe after a few blows to head.
It pains to say it but I’m predicting a Matt Hughes victory and here’s why. Both Hughes and Serra have recently gone a full 3 rounds with Chris Lytle and while Serra constantly struggled in their fight Hughes was dominate. Serra was unable to inflict any real damage and took a few shots from Lylte, overall a very close fight. While Hughes was able to control Lylte and was able to nullify all of Lytle’s attacks, I personally felt if he would have put a little more effort into the fight he could have finished it. Hughes has surely learned from his mistakes and would be unwise to make this fight a stand-up battle, he should be able to control Serra at will and at the very least edge out a unanimous decision.
The outcome of this fight will determine the future of the welterweight division and answer many questions, was Serra’s TKO of GSP a fluke? Is Hughes back on track? Personally I want to see St. Pierre avenge his loss to Serra in much the same way he did with Hughes, but thinking about it I have no problem watching him tool Hughes a second time around as well. All we can do is wait and see.
