This question is for accountants only. On a scale of 1-10, how happy are you with your job? What are the pros and cons of your job? The reason why I'm asking is because I'm an accounting major and don't wanna waste my time if I'm going to be unhappy. So far I found it a bit interesting, but my real passion is something else. However, with my real passion, I won't be able to secure myself financially and that is something I'm really concerned about. I know with accounting, I will be able to secure myself. So is it worth it? How much does your job satisfy you?

No matter what your passion is, accounting will help you find a way to make a living in it. Take accounting jobs where you can see how businesses are formed and made profitable, and you will be in a great position to get into whatever your passion is.

My current job is a 7 - it has almost none of the political problems most people hate about desk jobs, and is very intellectually challenging. I went into accounitng thinking about like you, and I've seen many others who've done the same. The intellectual challenge is definitely there if you don't mind a job with long hours and lots of stress. There are two kinds of accountants - desk jockeys and adrenaline junkies. There are ample boring jobs for the former and exciting jobs for the latter.

I worked in the accounting field (as a CPA and corporate accountant) for 15 years before I changed careers. My passion for working with people led me to client service and then HR. I have never regretted the business foundation I built in the accounting profession, and it has really given me an edge in understanding the bottom line of the companies I have worked for.

My suggestion is to work at a company where there are many different types of business opportunities, not just accounting, and network to find what type of job at that company IS of more interest to you. You can generally post from inside the company to transfer to a different type of work.

On a scale of 1-10, I'd say I was satisfied at a "7" level.

I really enjoy my job as an accountant but I am an accountant for a small company (20 people or so). There are only 2 accountants in the entire company so one person really can make a difference.
