I say to appologize and explain what happened, especially if you really offended someone. They'll appreciate it, though the sooner the better.

Because I was born without an editor between my brain and my mouth, I do this all the time. More often than not a simple appology letting the 'offended' person know that you had no intention of being rude is enough.

I agree with Tab- call and clarify what your original intent was, but you realize the end result did not come across the way you wanted it to and you are sorry about that.

I've done this, make a comment I thought was funny but it wasn't. I would say, "well now I thought I was being funny and that wasn't funny at all, was it? I'm sorry". Smile, and forget it.

the moment you start to explain...it just gets worse and worse

lol it's best just to let it go. Trust me, I do this alot. If you try to explain yourself, it just draws more attention to it and looks as though you're making excuses.
