It’s a funny question you have here. Most will think in terms of how places of worship fleece the credulous monetarily. This certainly is one way to think about it, and it is a sad fact. However, there is even something more lamentable about the way places of worship exploit their followers, which go beyond money.

The greater cost, to worshippers is not money, but the time lost and loss of better opportunities to use ones intelligence and talents. Every hour spent in church, every minute spent adulating over an improbable God, is an hour and minute that could have better been used to cultivate the intellect, help someone in need, or just merely enjoy life. This is the greatest way that religious institutions have robbed men and women, and if they are to be convicted of their crimes, this ranks at the very top of the list. Money can be regained when stolen, but you cannot redress the wrong of depriving someone of their time and potential opportunities.

Salvation coverage is free, through the tithes which God requires we give (since it's all his anyway) we are taught the word, receiving spiritual growth and blessings. The church does not give salvation, having a personal relationship with Christ does.

Salvation is a free gift from God. My current place of worship can't sell me salvation. I can only get it through God's grace.

I think we should go back to the Medieval version of indulgences - you pay for each sin instead of devoting 10% of your income.

Thanks, but didn't Christ already pay for our salvation?
Coming unto him is free.
(and if you are a religion that charges, you must not be a true religion in my oppionion.)
