I am going through the same thing so I've just decided to strike out on my own offer my services for free or at only $200-300 for the first few weddings and go from there .. I research like crazy for vendors in my area so that I have a reference file I love the design aspect so anytim I have a few extra dollars I practice making fabulous centerpieces, altar arrangments and design schemes and I just pray !! Just step out on faith !!

The reason you are not getting any response is . . competition.

If you go to gatheringguide.com you will see that every state lists lots and lots of wedding planners and consultants. Some of them have been in business two weeks and some of them have been in business for twenty years.

Occasionally, you will find someone in the wedding business that is looking for "free help" or an apprentice or a gopher but those opportunities are few and far between. Why? Because wedding professionals work very hard to develop business relationships, and we are very protective of those client lists (Brides and Grooms) and the vendors that we work with (photogaphers, DJs, limousine companies, caterers, etc.).

If you wish to get some experience in the "wedding industry" may I suggest getting a job with a caterer or at a banquet hall. You will learn a lot there and it's a great beginning!

I would speak to the Dean and find out some former students names that graduated in your field and contact them. Since they had to do the same, they would probably be willing to allow you to "shadow" them for some time. That would probably be your best route. Otherwise, I wouldnt phone anyone, it will be a much better advantage for you if you walk in and meet the panners face to face and explain what you are needing to do for your diploma. I would guess that the people you have contacted probably dont really understand what you need to do, plus if you talk to them face to face, they cant ignore you like they can an email or a phone call. But also be upfront with them saying that you wont be in their way and that you just will be there to observe, but that if they need an extra hand that you will pitch in at your pleasure and not at any cost to them or the client.

Good luck!

my opinion is offer your services for free or at a deep discount to brides-to-be in order to get their business and ensure they will give you a recommendation or allow you to use them as a referal.
