My mom has decided to get a yorkie. She started researching breeders and found one that looked like a reputable breeder.
The pup we are interested in getting is a male yorkie. He is championsired , comes with a three year health gurantee and his parents had all necessary health tests done and have great pedigrees. My mom was under the impression that she would be paying $1000+ for a yorkie from a reputable breeder. This pup is only $650.
Now my mom is having doubts about why this pup is so cheap compared to most yorkies. Does she have anything to be concerned with.Does this breeder sound like a good breeder?

Forgot to add Ive met the breeder, and she showed me the purchasing contract, health gurantee and pedigrees and health screenings for the parents.
My mom was just wondering why the pup was so cheap.

Rose- I asked her why she breeds Yorkies and this is what she said. She strives to produce
the most beautiful Yorkies, while breeding for health, type, structure
and soundness.
And yes she does require a spay/neutur contract with limited registeration.

Some breeders offer reasonable prices, and it sounds to me that this breeder is one of them. I highly suggest that you get this Yorkie that you want.

P.S. There actually are "back yard breeders" who sell "mutts" for $1000.00 or more, like this one for example.

I know a few really great breeders of small dogs in the area (yorkies, pomeranians, maltese) that sell their dogs from anywhere between $600 and $1100. Often times if you sign a spay/neuter contract, the price of the dog will drop dramatically (towards the $600-800 mark) since you no longer own any breeding rights.

I think the best bet would be to talk to other people who have bought her dogs. Ask her for some references. Think about it this way, if she can't provide a reference, why not? Will no one give one? Are the dogs genetically defective? Do the owner's have problems with the breeder? Personally, if I bought one of her dogs and it was healthy, beautiful and well bred, I would be happy to give a reference, and I am sure you would be there same.

A good breeder, to me, requires references to where her dog goes and may even insist on seeing the home. She will require contacts to be signed that will guarentee health for up to two years. The breeder will also be able to provide quite a few good references and overall, you will get a good feeling (like she loves and cares about the dogs) when you meet her.

Either way, good luck and do your research! :)

Price doesn't necessarily mean quality. Junky puppymill pups in petshops cost a fortune. IF this breeder will supply copies of the testing results for you to see, and pedigrees to take home with your pup, and has a contract where she will take the puppy back at any time for any reason, I'd say you have quite a deal going on there. I personally price my own pups under what BYB's and millers are selling for because I feel it will help people understand the difference between quality and poorly bred dogs. I'm going to lose money breeding anyway, and I figure that my costs are what I am paying to get the ones I want to show. Just be sure she can support the claims she is making.

Price doesn't indicate quality. There are some very expensive dogs out there who are poor quality. I sometimes sell a pup for less, especially when I really, really like the people and know that will be an excellent home. Good breeders are more concerned with a permanent, loving home than the money.

She sounds like a good breeder.

Does she sell with a spay/neuter contract and limited registration.

Ask her why she bred the litter.

Edit: She sounds like a good breeder. Except the question to ask her why did she breed this litter. I wonder if the answer would be money. but even though she sounds a lot better than SOME of the breeders. I would go for it. Good luck.

As others have said, price doesn't always indicate quality -- a perfect example is the $1000 "Puggle" someone mentioned.

It sounds like this breeder is doing everything right. And I have to agree with Jennifer T.

Unscrupulous breeders will take advantage of the current "Yorkie fad" by pricing as high as they can get. Sounds like this breeder isn't one of those people.

If you've met her and feel good about her, go for it. I also don't think it would be too rude to ask why the puppy is priced lower than what you've seen.

The additional details in your question make me feel a lot better that this is a professional, reputable Yorkie breeder! Whew.

As for other questions you should ask a Yorkie breeder, I put together a page with detailed info, tips and even a video that will help you make a great choice: http://www.squidoo.com/Yorkie-Breeders/

Have your Mum do some research on this breeder. Ask at vets, groomers, even local rescue centres, and see what the 'word' is on her.
It sounds like your Mum has stumbled accross a VERY good breeder, if everything is taken at face value - so check out her reputation, to see if her rep. matches up to her promises.
Don't wait too long though - with thoses terms this pup wont be waiting around long!

I was in search for a yorkie and found a breeder that was selling them for the same price. I thought it was too cheap, so I sent an email to the breeder and she told me that she was in Africa and needed to get rid of the dog right away to continue her work in Africa. She wanted me to send the money and then she would send the dog. I knew then that it was a scam , there are alot of scams going on with dogs , be careful

Is the pup "Show Quality" or "Pet Quality" There can be a signifiacnt price difference between them. The breeder sounds responsible considering their health gurantee and the testing etc....
