A wonderful gift for any parent is a beautifully framed picture of his child, you. Even better is a picture of both of you together. You can go to just about any major retailer (Wal-Mart, Target, Costco, etc.) and use their self-service machine to blow the picture up to about 8X10. Then find a very masculine looking frame, like black leather or brushed steel, for it.
He'll appreciate the work you put into making the gift, and he'll be able to display the picture at home where you can both enjoy it.

Well, I'd say get him something that he wouldn't have a choice but to use.
For instance, if somebody has feet (I'm being a bit facetious here, but it will have a point...I promise) then you buy them socks.
He's a carpenter, that requires a lot of work and I'm sure he comes home tired pretty frequently. Look at some of the mundane tasks that he has to do on a daily basis that you can make easier with a cheap gift.
For instance, if you had a lot of money and he hates doing dishes, a dishwasher might be a good idea. But, unfortunately you don't have a lot of money, so lets take another angle.
I too was recently searching (google) for a cheap gift for my dad (obviously that's how I found this question). I found an answer to mine rather quickly however so I figured I'd spread the wealth so to speak if at all possible.
Back to those "mundane tasks". Does he have to shave? If so, let me tell you, as a guy...it's a pain. It takes time that I frequently don't have. I ended up buying my dad an electric razor (that's what I found by the way when I was searching) and then one for myself. If you'd like to check it out you can do so here: http://tinyurl.com/ynotsg
It's ridiculously cheap, and it would definitely be something he'd use (if hes got hair of course).
If not, then try to think of some other mundane tasks that you don't like doing (or that you know he doesn't like) and put that together with something you know would remove/make those tasks easier for him on a daily basis.
Hope I helped! Take care!

Offer him a hug for his birthday. If he is a Carpenter then think of his job. He is probably on the go all the time. Maybe some new gloves or knee pads for his work is nice.

How about a Home Depot gift card?
That way he can buy a tool he needs either for work, or around the house.
If you don't want to be that impersonal, then look at how he spends his free time and find something that fits. If he doesn't watch movies or listen to music much, he must do something when he's not sleeping and working.

Another option, if you are close enough to him (location) would be to take him out and do something he enjoys with him. He'd most likely really appreciate the time spent with you, especially if he's able to share an interest of his with you. The memory will certainly be treasured. Be sure to bring a camera. A nice touch would be a letter to him afterwards, recounting the time spent together and how much you enjoyed it, with pictures.

Take him to dinner or make him a special dinner - of course include a card.
Does he like a certain coffee or tea that you can buy him?
My husband loves flavored coffees and nice creamers, but doesn't buy them a lot because he's the only one who drinks them in our house...
Or a certain kind of music you can get him (my Dad likes Elvis, but would never think to get himself an Elvis CD or Tape depending on what he has in his car to listen to) Maybe an inexpensive portable CD player and a couple mix CD's that he can listen to on the job or at home?
What about something for his car or a massager for home (like for his neck, feet or back - I bet he gets tired if he has to do physical labor all day!).
One year my daughter made her Dad big cookies with ice cream in the middle of 2 cookies (homemade like the ones you buy in the store) and he ate them and loved them, especially since she made them just for him and it took her awhile to get them the way she wanted them.
Also a shirt or hat that you think he would like...if there's a special team, event, sport, etc he likes look for something with that theme..
Just a few thoughts...Good Luck!

Does he have a hobby? Collect anything? How about if you just take him and your mom out to dinner and get him a nice card? Maybe take him to see a movie, just the 2 of you?

Take him to one of his favorite resturants.
If not, sometimes it seems a bit impersonal, but get him a gift certificate to one of his favorite store. This way he'll get to purchase something of his choice since he rarly uses anything you buy him. Hope this helped!

Get him something consumable like a dessert he really likes or a basket of fruit, cheese and nuts. Or better yet bake him something from scratch.
