I don't know about the mayonnaise or mineral oil, but your local drug store should have medicated shampoo that should kill the lice. Follow the instructions on the label, which may include repeating the process a couple of times.
Most of the shampoos come with a nit comb...it is simply a very fine comb that will catch the dead lice and eggs in its teeth as you comb from the root to the ends of your hair.
I also recommend getting the associated spray, to use on your mattresses and headrests in your car.
You'll want to wash all of your pillows in hot water (or consider getting new ones, since they're not too expensive). If the case of head lice involves children, you'll probably also want to wash and/or spray any stuffed animals that they've been using lately.
Wash or replace all of your brushes, also.

Usually, they cannot be gotten rid of unless you apply a lice-killing shampoo, from the drug store/pharmacy, or neem oil, a natural pesticide which some herbalists sell.
Or shave all your hair off. Regular shampoos will not work.
The mayonnaise treatment which another user has mentioned sometimes works for very mild cases, but if the infestation is more advanced, a few of the numerous nits will not come off and you will still have lice when the remaining nits hatch.
Before lice-killing shampoos were available, people used to use kerosene to kill them. But I don't recommend this since it is flammable and dangerous!!

This really works...you put some Real Mayonaise on your hair and leave it for about an hour..then comb it with a "nit comb" one of those fine combs that pulls the lice eggs out.. then rinse... This really works.. I did this once.. your hair will be greasy for a few days though. but its better than head lice..don't you think??
Also another method is Mineral Oil... however I have never tried this method before so I am not sure if it will work
But the Mayo treatment will work..

use a treatment from the chemist. You must also do the bedding the pillows lounges towels anywhere the infected person has been put everything through the dryer or iron it. carpets to the little bludgers live just about everywhere just long enough to re-infect. re check in 5 - 7 days. try lavender or tea-tree oil mixed with water & sprayed on your hair everyday seems to stop them. be vigilant good luck you will eventually win. PS playing hairdressers at school is a really bad idea.

Well... you can shave your head... or go to your pharmasist and ask them what shampoos you can use to get rid of them. I think the shampoos are over the counter now... but you may need to go to the dr. for a perscription.... I never had it so Im unsure... but I know there are special medicated shampoos to take care of this little problem. Dont scratch at your scalp... and dont share a brush with anyone (if this is not for you... then pass that along to whomever has it). Good luck!
