I have worked with Iranians for over 30 years.
I have never met an Iranian who was not remarkably thoughtful and courteous.
I am surprised at the behavior of Ahmadinejad and the Mullahs and Ayatollahs of Iran because that behavior that they engage in is so different from my experience with Iranians.
My experience with Iranians is that they are some of the most thoughtful people that I have ever met.
I have never met an Iranian that was paranoid, defensive or ungrateful.
In fact in my experience the exact opposite is true. When I do even very small favors for my Iranian colleagues they make it a point to express a great deal of gratitude.

so does this make it ok for me to ask : why are so many british people selfish and arrogant?
Stop generalising. You can't just meet one Iranian and make an opinion about a massive population - it just doesn't work like that.
I'm not saying you're being racist, because I know it's just a question. I'm half Iranian and not offended by what you said, I just hate it so much when people are so general about people that obviously no-one seems to form their own opinions about, or give them a chance.

I have worked with and known Iranians. The ones I know are very nice, polite, competent people. They are devout Muslims who are the first to speak out against radical Islam as being a dangerous stupid cult that harms Islam, and makes Islam look bad for the rest of the world.

I don't think you are describing Iranians. That's a perfect description for Americans.

Where is your evidence that many Iranians are like this? Think before you talk.
