Most likely the cat needs to have its teeth cleaned by the vet. But, bloodwork and a check-up are good ideas, too. Especially in older cats, foul breath can be a symptom of disease.

a vet check is a good idea. Stinky breath is a sign of ill health.

Keeping the mouth clean and free of tarter helps.

Since I started feeding my cats raw food, their breath is much better than it has ever been.

Cats' breath shouldn't small bad. It's usually a sign of dental problems if their breath smells. I learned this the hardest way, and lost a cat due to undiagnosed dental disease. Get the vet to have a look at his/her teeth. If you catch it early, it won't be a problem. It's so worth it, I can't emphasise enough how much I regret not acting sooner when my dear cat showed early signs.

If your cat's breath is that bad, please have it checked by a vet. Just like people, cat's teeth and overall health can affect their breath. If you cat is basically healthy it may just be a case of feeding dry food rather than canned food. I know mine cat's breath is horrid after their nightly "treat" of canned food.

Try brushing its teeth with a small brush and some animal toothpaste. I do that for my cats and it makes their breath better!
