fast growing trees?

i want to plant some trees....what are the fastest growing shade trees? fastest flowering trees? (i'm in VA.)

As for fast shade trees, take a look at: Dawn redwood (Metasequoia glyptostoboides), Tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera - also a flowering tree) and Honeylocust (Gleditsia tricanthos var. inermis). They are all pretty pest and disease free.

For flowering trees, it gets a little harder, because many grow one way in the sun, and differently in a more protected location. I'd take a look at crab apple (Malus), flowering pear (Pyrus calleryana - although I'm loathe to suggest it, it's a bit over used) or maybe Japanese lilac tree (Syringa reticulata).

Definitely take your tree list to your local independent garden center to see which they carry or can get for you.

The fastest growing trees are in the poplar, willow, and maple families. However keep in mind that fast growing directly equates with weak limbs that drop readily and surface roots that can be difficult to deal with.
