Yes, I'd say mine helped me in getting both an AFROTC and an NROTC scholarship.

Physically demanding? Not very. Workout probably 2-3 times a week is the standard for while you're in college. I'm not sure how the navy handles Cadet (Future officer) training, but THAT will be where the challenge and the drill sergeants (and yelling officers) comes in. Then again, that will only make up a very small portion of your college experience.

Your instructors will be tough, but nothing like drill sergeants. They're not training you to march rank and file, they're training you to be a critical problem solver, to know and appropriately implement regs and orders, to watching for your personal motivation/discipline. If you're an eagle scout and reasonably in shape, you'll do just fine. Best wishes and hope to see you out there.

Hello Born2Fly:

The Eagle will give a small advantage, but you really need top grades, good physical condition, leadership experience, and motivation. Your academics should be heavy in mathematics and sciences. Join some academic clubs in your school. A sport will help quite a bit, as will a part time job. Your ASVAB, SAT and ACT test scores should be high. You can retake these tests many times and use the highest score you earn.

ROTC courses are taught by Commissioned and Non-commissioned officers. The coursework will entail Naval (and military) history, leadership theory, tactics and deportment. It will cover the equipment used by the military, some military law, and the responsibilities of a Commissioned Officer. The physical aspect will be running, push ups, sit ups, and pull ups. Training is for stamina, not strength. Start NOW.

Contact the NROTC instructor of one of the universities you wish to attend, and ask what the scholarship students need. You will also need to have fairly good eyesight. By your screen name, it appears you want to fly, so you will need perfect uncorrected vision.

Have you looked into the service academies?

What will you do if you aren't accepted as a scholarship student?

What is your life goal? If you want to be at sea, did you know that there is also the Coast Guard and the Merchant Marine Academy?

You might also speak with your local Navy recruiter. Don't sign anything, just go in and ask about carrier opportunities and what paths there are for Commissioned officers.
