I've been an Atheist for 5 years now but I'm starting to feel an unexplainable emptiness inside, a sense of no meaning or purpose.... what should I do, return to God?

Nah, Atheism owns. If you really feel meaningless, convert to Satanism.
I don't think idolizing an imaginary figure will really help bring meaning to your life.
Adopt a kid, buy a puppy, get a boyfriend, write a book...

Yes you should turn to God even if he doesn't exist the point is to balance the ying and the yang ( Chinese thing ying and yang). The Ying and the Yang are good and bad energy that balances out life.
What you should do is under stand that God doesn't want any thing except to be acknowledged. He doesn't want a relation ship, he doesn't want you to be over whelmed and He does want you to walk in peace with you worrying about what He is thinking. The reason your starting to feel all that emptiness is because God has carried you for 5 years and he's concerned that you might not come around so He's starting to let go just enough so that you can feel all the emptiness and return before it's to late. Be a friend to God because some times in life when every thing else fails or falls apart including relationships we usually turn to a friend . A friend will never leave you alone, when every one has abandoned you. Don't go to God looking for a relationship rather go looking for a friend. Relationships are for humans, he's a friend when in time of need a best friend who'll never leave you and when He doesn't see you for a while will come to see if your okay.

Even as an atheist, you can find purpose by being an active part of organisations. Would your organs have as much purpose without the body they form? Likewise for you, get involved in hobby clubs, community/politics, activism, whatever. You can also find purpose by immersing yourself into your job. The more you are part of something, the more you will feel a sense of purpose.

If you are concerned about ultimate purpose, then maybe you just need a different atheistic paradigm on reality. Think of time as a dimension and realize that you utterly and ultimately occupy a finite domain in time-space. No matter who is doing what in other times, you are "immortally" residing in your time. Think of the universe as a big building and all the bricks after your time are held by you and your contemporary bricks, which are held up by the ancestral bricks. So sure you will die, but the response to that it "so what, I'm still here in this time." Might as well fret about nonexistence before your birth. It's just another boundary. Might as well fret about having to end in space instead of being infinitely fat. See where I am going with this? Within the part of space-time relevant to where you are and when you are, everything you do is the most important thing that can be done!

Hope that helps.

you need to ask yourself why you became or are an athiest 1st?what made you feel this way? You sound as if you once believed in God?? I had an emptiness for years in my life. I didnt think there was a God at some points in my life. However one day I attended church with my now husband(i told him not to try and convert me and he didnt). After that day i never looked back. I realised that it was GOD who was missing from my life for all those years i felt lost and was looking for answers. I dont claim to have all the answers as i dont and i still have lots of upset in my life but i would tell you to think about things and come to your own conclusions.
You Will reach the right decision in time whether its sooner or later.
Good Luck and God Bless whatever you decide XX

If you're questioning it then you must know that the choice you made 5 years ago was not the right one. All I can say is PRAY about it. Whatever made you convert before must have been bad, but remember that God forgives and he has a plan for you. Maybe the five years without him will make you want to know him all the more. Good Luck and God Bless You!

Your words imply that in a way, you do believe in God! Congratulations!

The emptiness you feel is something natural. We are programmed to feel the need for God. It is in our genes! What you are feeling is another chance, another call from God that you return to Him.

Maybe your problem with religion is not really with God, but rather with the Institution of Church. Many people mix between Institution and religion, and because of the mistakes of the institution, they abandon religion altogether.

God is there, and the errors of religious institutions are not His mistake. Pray to God directly and ask Him to guide you to the best religious practice. He will answer you if you insist!

salaam-peace.

If you believe in "God", you are not an atheist.
You were probably just mad at "God". Because if you were an atheist, you'd have a purpose and it would be to live as far away from Christians as possible. Which is actually a very good purpose.

no one can answer that for you. It is a big decision. while I am sure that God would be happy to have you back, it is even written that he will be, You alone can make that choice.

If you are feeling empty now, where you did not before, then it is likely you are being "called" back to him. I would suggest discussing this with various clergy, finding one that seems to meet your current needs.

but remember, it's not about the relationship between you and a clergy or church, but rather, it's about the relationship between you and God.

Best of luck in your search.

God has been with you all along, even while you were an atheist. The emptiness you have felt is a result of shutting God out of your life.

You never left God, you just don't know it. All of God's creatures live within God's embrace. That feeling of no meaning has to do with you not knowing yourself. Don't try to cover it over with more words, look within, allow that emptiness to be there and just watch it without reaction and see what happens. The answers are within you not out there in churches and books.

Most definitely turn to God! It's called a spiritual malady feeling like you do. God is the only one to fill that hole of emptiness, etc... I can promise, only because I've been where you are. Take Care
