It's almost as bad as 'significant other'.

What are better alternatives that don't sound so goofy?

You know, you are probably right. The words seem designed to work with straights or gays. That's probably why they seem goofy. BF or GF is a little better, but still kinda goofy. We have to come up with something for straights that is more respectable.

"Ol' lady' or 'ol man' aren't too bad, but they imply old age like BF/GF implies too young an age.

What can you folks come up with (for straights)? I have faith in you.

I tend to use partner when I don't want it to sound informal. BF/GF sounds like you are not so serious about them. I mean there is the word mate. Though I just think of people that have sex or friend. Unfortunately I don't believe many other words you could use that sound good. Though you could take a look at this link maybe you'd find one you like. Tell me if you liked any of them.

I prefer to use girlfriend/boyfriend in conversation, but when I answer questions on here, I say "partner" usually. I don't often know the sex of the person I am responding to (and even if I suspect, they could be a homosexual) and I don't want to offend them.

However, I wish there was a better alternative to boyfriend/girlfriend that didn't sound so formal or ambiguous.

Yes. Somehow I do too find it annoying. British I think used it first for the meaning you want to convey..
Since I myself have not found better alternative, I say, Companion? or compatible soul? I don't know.

**Hey, I am back! Can u believe it?!
Almost "died" with the mail incident.

How about simply "my man" or "my woman"? Doesn't have the "old" qualifier so it could be used for any age.

"Partner" is great if you are a cowboy.

How about the good old fashioned boyfriend or girlfriend?
