when you were a child did you fear when you had to bring home a bad report card to your parents? a bad test grade? did you fear when you had to tell your parents something you did wrong? like your first traffic ticket? or if you were arrested? who in their life hasn't at one time or another feared their parents finding out something they did that was wrong or bad? did they fear them even if their parents were Good? why? only difference? God's consequences are bigger, why? because with God eternity is in question, a bad grade in high school has the potential to ruin your whole college future, a driving record has the potential to ruin your whole ability to drive, unprotected unmarried sex has the potential to ruin you whole entire life while on earth, but an offense against God, he has to look at it on an eternity view, not a next week view.

His main character trait is holiness, all others flow from that. He is also perfectly righteous. The unbeliever should fear God, knowing He is perfectly able and willing to pour out His wrath on them for their sinful, depraved state. The believer fears, as in having the utmost respect for Him. The believer has no reason to fear the wrath of God upon them, since they will never experience that.
Psa 111:10 The fear of Jehovah is the beginning of wisdom; all who do them have a good understanding; His praise is standing forever!
Pro 1:7 The fear of Jehovah is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Pro 9:10 The fear of Jehovah is the beginning of wisdom; and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

From the Jewish perspective there are two types of fear. When the Divine Name is used yira (fear) Hashem means respect. This is LORD in the KJV.
When the Elohiym is used which is G-d acting with the attribute of strict justice, the same word means fear in the sense of fearing the affliction therapy that will result if we don't serve G-d.
If you think it's unfair for G-d to use affliction therapy, then it should also be unfair to put people in prison for a crime. G-d uses affliction therapy to redirect the stubborn back so they can be happy again.

We don't have to fear god. Its just the churches way of encouraging people to follow blindly. The best way to control people is by using fear. There is no reason to fear the real god which is goodness, love, and peace.

I like your question.
The truth is, God doesn't want us fearing Him out of fear that He will destroy you or punish you somehow. The fear that he was talking about is the kind of fear that you will (or do) have for your wife. You love her so much that you don't want to do anything that would ever upset her, because you know how much she also loves you...

It's a misunderstanding we have of the word "fear" in the Bible. To fear God does not mean to be afraid of Him (although a lot of us should be!), but to show honor, respect, and reverence towards Him.

The meaning of "fear" as it is used in reference to God does NOT mean being afraid.
It means to hold in awe or reverence.
Look it up in the dictionary.
