I am in the final process of getting an implant now. From friends who have them already, I understand they are great & last forever - long past your own teeth.
The cost can vary depending on the dentist. Mine is costing around 4K by the time I pay the periodontist for the surgery portion then my own dentist for the final tooth. I have heard of higher & lower.
The process is long. Your own tooth is pulled then you wait 4 months for the gum to heal. Then the base is implanted requiring a 2nd surgery to implant it into your jaw. After, you wait 4 months again for it to all set in right - normally allowing for bone graft. Then a 3rd surgery to cut away your gums which grow over the implant base. A month or so later it is finally time to actually put in the new tooth. I am at that point.
It has not been painful but it has definitely been time consuming. From the time your tooth is surgically removed until the final implant is in place you are talking 9-10 months during which you have a false tooth like a retainer.

Grinding down the tooth to put a false cap on is a "crown", whereas "implant" implies putting a pin in the jaw to support the false tooth (i.e. the original roots are unsaveable). Despite novacaine, this is a somewhat painful and seriously uncomfortable procedure (the doc will wear a plastic guard over their face for blood).
Pricewise, hope that you have good insurance. An implant can easily run a thousand bucks (not including the necessary root canal).

What are Dental Implants? A organic tooth incorporates a crown (the section you notice above the gum), and the foundation (the section hidden under the gum). that's the foundation interior the jawbone that surely holds the organic tooth in place. A dental implant is a small guy-made titanium fixture that serves as a alternative for the foundation part of a lacking organic tooth. Titanium is used with the aid of fact that's the main nicely suited with our human physique. The dental implant is placed interior the bone of the top or decrease jaw and applications as an anchor for the alternative tooth. After the bone has grown around the implant, implants can carry a crown, bridge or overdenture only like roots carry organic tooth in place. Implants supply extra help the place tooth are lacking with out putting forces onto final organic tooth. they may be used to help the alternative of a single lacking tooth or an entire useful set for people who've lost many or all of their tooth. in case you notice my avatar you notice a grin it somewhat is mine and that i've got dental implants.

I had some work done on my teeeth. What ended up happening was they ground down my teeth into little stumps. It was insanely painful. I got several several novicain shots. then they use a special glue and stick a hollow fake tooth over my originals. They hurt like hell for days. Even afterwards months and years later they were still sensitive near my gum line. I think there is several different kinds of implants so i suggest researching all types. Good luck
