I've had the chance over the years to work with both VW and Honda's over a 30 year period in the automotive service business, and I can tell you that Honda is more reliable and dependable than VW is.
It wasn't always that way; once upon a time both Honda and VW were about the same; I worked with VW on and off from 1980 till 2005, had a few stints with Hondas over the years and during the early 80's they were about the same.
I think the problem came when VW decided to move "upscale" and go from being transportation to trying to cover all the bases and have near luxury as well. The German engineering model is based upon being complex, not what just works. The VW "automatic stick" in the Beetle is a good example; instead of using a fully automatic transmission like the type 2, 3, or 4, they used a semi automatic that you had to shift gears (but no clutch pedal).
The system relied on contact switches, a vacuum servo and a complicated (and too often) adjustment proceedure to work correctly. The upshot was that after 6 or 7 years, VW gave up on it, and all Beetles became once again a standard transmission vehicle only.

I think VW is trying to get back somewhat in doing things that are less complex from the engineering standpoint. Time will tell if their efforts will be sucessful. There is something wrong when using the Navigation system requires an engineering degree to use it. Sometimes simple is still better.

Anyway, that's my viewpoint based upon my experience in the automotive service field.

The two best (best in terms of mechanical reliability and functionality) cars I've ever driven were a '93 Honda Civic and a '72 VW Westfalia Camper. I used both for daily commuting; however, I also drove the VW around the United States on a four-month, cross-country trip.

I took it above 10,000 feet, through snow on North America's highest road; I took it below sea-level across the corner of Death Valley in triple-digit heat. It never missed a beat, and it was a twenty-five-year-old vehicle at the time of trip. I lived in it, too.

As far as the Civic, well... I'm quite certain that I'd still be driving it if it weren't for a rather serious accident while merging onto I-95.

Old VWs and new(-er) Hondas are hard to beat in terms of reliability and dependability. Happy motoring!

Honda is more reliable but Vw has higher build quality if you are looking for basic transportation Honda or Toyota are the best bet. if you are looking for build quality and driving dynamics VW is the better choice but will cost you in repairs and maintenance as a trade off.

convinced. Hondas are good, yet no longer just about as good as they could have you ever believe. The 20 3 hundred and sixty 5 days previous volkswagens I see utilising round are in extra positive structure than the 20 3 hundred and sixty 5 days previous hondas, and that i see extra of them in spite of fewer revenues. I had a ninety 5 golfing and all i mandatory to do changed into the established stuff, no unsceduled upkeep (certainly, I enable some issues flow longer than they must have yet no concerns). after I offered it with 220,000 km, it changed into utilising extra positive than many new vehicles on the instantaneous.
