That is typically referred to as a stand mixer. For volume baking, like what you would find in a bakery....yes, a stand mixer is essential and used at a constant. Of course, in a bakery the sizes of the mixers are much larger. For smaller batches, especially in breads, its almost always better to make it by hand. If you know what you are doing( how to knead, etc). For home use though, it would be more of a personal preference, or how much time you have to mix something by hand. The stand mixers will cut the prep time down. If using these machines, make sure they have a 750 watt or more motor in them, otherwise they can strain and burn up from kneading bread. Hope this helps.

Like Heather said, you're talking about a stand mixer.

As far as when you would use it. It depends on how often you cook and bake and the quantities that you're producing.

If you're making one pie, it might be easier to make the crust by hand. On the other hand, if you're baking a dozen pies for a bake sale, it could be easier to use your stand mixer.

With any kitchen appliance, it takes trial and error to find out how to get the best results. When you're experienced, you can feel when the dough is ready as you're working it. With the mixer, you will have to time the kneading and check it periodically. So long as you're consistant with your quantities and temperatures, once you've recorded what was successful, you should be able to replicate that success (presuming all else such as ambient temperature and humidity are relatively constant).

Have fun and good luck!

I am not sure what a Kenmore chef is.

However, if it is a table top mixer. They work great.
You will be able to make doughs, mix cookies and what ever else requires mixing.

I have a table top mixer. I would not bake without it

A Kenwood Chef is well worth buying if you like to bake, great for cakes, breads etc, and the liquidiser that comes with most models is very good too.

"Food processors," that's the generic term

Much easier then mixing by hand. But it is a good idea to really read the user guide to get full benefit.

It's one of those things that lots of people buy, but then just carry on like they used to because they can't be bothered to really learn how to use it.

Slicing, cutting, mixing, dough making, baking, blending, it just goes on and on. I make so many things now that I never thought about before, and my family not only love my Kenwood, but they love me even more now because of the cool stuff I make, LOL

Jan, you have to ask yourself the question, do you use it regularly? If you do then it's worth every cent. At the moment we have been given the KITCHENAID Pro, it's a new model in the Pro range, and it's very good. My wife's normal mixer is a Kenwood, be the same age as yours, but that hasn't gone to god as yet, and when my wife uses it, she works it to the ground with the amount she has to bake. In the years we have had, we have not had to get anything repaired on it. One of the ladies on my wife's committee, has the new Titanium one, and she loves it.

I have a Kitchen Aid mixer. Love it.

Makes cookies, brownies, cake, bread... etc. Suuuuuuuuuper easy to mix and it always comes out a much better consistency than doing it by hand. Also, it takes waaaaaaay less effort. Although they are pricey, they last forever. Mine is a hand-me-down and is over 30 years old. works like new.

It is called a "food processor". It is easier than doing by hand but creates a hell of lot of washing up. Mine has been languishing in a cupboard for years. Most people I know get fed up with them after a short while.

A professional electric food mixer. They are quicker, and for bread making they are more consistent, and they don't make your arms ache!
