I have to go to an event at my Uncles house and they serve some really gross food.

Not only is the taste so bad it makes you want to gag. Also, the safety of the food is questionable. He is SO cheap that he keeps food much longer than he should.

What can I do?

Eat before you go. Or you could make a dish to take as a token of your gratitude for being invited. Then at least there will be one edible thing there.

Hmmm! I know what you are talking about. I have a brother who does much the same thing. He keeps things in his freezer until they are freezer burned and then cooks them. He buys the ends of cold cuts and serves them to guests. He is not poor; just eccentric. He makes more than both my husband and I make but he is cheap, cheap, cheap!!!! He buys the poorest cuts of meats and throws things together. Sometimes it works, most of the time it doesn't. I don't like eating expired food or things that have been in the freezer since the early 90's (and that is the truth). He served berries that had been in the freezer since 1993 (this was last week).

I would just bring along a special dish when you go there to eat and tell him that you have food allergies and that is why you have prepared something to bring. Tell him they are uncertain what the allergy is from so you are eating the things you know you can tolerate.

Since you said it's an "event", I'm sure there are other people who feel the same way. Why don't you get together with them and each of you bring something for the occasion - one person could bring the protein, another the starch, another the veggies. Then call your uncle and tell you that you and the other guests are treating him for a change.

Eat before you go and tell them that you are on a strict diet from the doc and can't eat food you don't make yourself. Or, say you have to be somewhere (prior commitment) but can come after dinner.

Another option is to say you arent' feeling well or have had the stomach flu and are sticking to liquids only for the next little while.

Eat before you go. And then be discreet and don't make a big deal about so as not to hurt anyones feelings. When you are served just push it around and hopefully no one will notice. Be a good sport and remember it is only one night. Then go get a pizza!!!! Good luck

do you absolutely have to go?
Insist that you will only come if you can take some food to share or just show up with extra food. if he's that cheap he should appreciate someone else paying for food
