This is for a leased Jeep. My husband and I will be sharing this vehicle. We do mostly city/suburban driving. We do take a long distance vacation about once or twice during the duration of the lease.
We currently have a 2004 Buick Regal with leather interior. It only has about 41,000km (25,477 miles) on it. We'd like to stick with leather seats because we have two dogs...no children...and leather is easier to clean.
We aren't really interested in the Jeep Wrangler because of the size and insurance costs. We've test driven the 2008 Compass, 2008 Patriot, 2008 Liberty, and 2008 Grand Cherokee Diesel. We're really leaning toward the Patriot Limited or the Liberty Limited.
We've test driven the Buick Allure and we like it well enough, but there is far too much cheap and easily scratchable plastic "burled wood" trim. If we were to get the Allure, I'm afraid I'd feel that I paid good money for a car I didn't get. (We really love our Regal but the lease is about to run out)

1. We prefer to lease so we always have a newer vehicle. We don't drive the car enough to get good value out of a purchase and the resale value of a 4 year old used car doesn't warrant the higher car payments of a purchased car even with our lower mileage.
2. The insurance for a Jeep Wrangler is very expensive and leasing one of those actually will cost us more in total than leasing a Patriot or Liberty. We live in an area of Canada where there is Provincial auto insurance so there is only one insurance company.

As a Liberty limited owner I can say it is a winner!
fuel economy
power
comfortable
roomy for a midsize
no parts replaced in 1 full year...(abnormal by todays standards)

It depends. If you want the best value, you're probably looking at the Patriot. On the other hand, the best vehicle between the '08 Patriot and the '08 Liberty is the Liberty. It has more features for the money, e.g. better off-road capability, larger interior space, and a higher ride height. It's a little thirstier, so you'll be making more stops, but then you'll always sacrifice gas mileage for performance, especially in SUVs.
But I'm sure your husband will love either - and it's a great excuse to get out more!

I listed 2 links with each vehicle on it. From the pictures I like the Patriot better. It looks nicer. Being that they are both in the same class and are about the same price I would go with the Patriot since it looks better. To me the Liberty is a bit boxy around the back. Whereas the Patriot looks a bit better. I'm a Jeep fan myself. I happen to like Jeep Grand Cherokees the best myself because there's more room and I think they look better than both Liberty and Patriot. However, if you are choosing between the Lib and the Pat, definitely go for the Pat.

As a Grand Cherokee owner for the past 12 years (4 leases + 2 purchases,) I would, of course recommended the Grand Cherokee. My second choice would be the Liberty. This, as a result of 2 friends, both with '07 Patriots, having had problems with them.
Good luck on your new purchase/lease.

We're Jeep lovers and as an owner of Grand Cherokee Laredo, you guess my answer. In a recent crash test the Jeep Grand Cherokee was among listed as good. If I have to choose between the Patriot and Liberty, I'll pick the Liberty.

Check out the 4 door Wrangler Unlimited. It is fun to drive and dog friendly. By the way, leasing makes bad economic sense for anything that will depreciate in value.

As far as resale value goes, the Jeep Wrangler has the 4th highest resale value of any vehicle on the market. But of course it is no grocery getter. More for the young and upcoming care free rugged type with no rug rats to carry around, just mans best friend (their dog).

Make sure its not a used Liberty. Here in AZ rental car companies use those for a few thousand miles and then resell them back to the dealership. I would be weary of anything that was possibly used as a rental.
I know that doesnt really answer your question but just a heads up.
