I started out with furnishings handed down from friends and an old roommate. My mom bought me a bed and my grandfather bought me a pots and pans set. I dont' remember the dishes that I had.
I think my favorite place to shop was Safeway. I couldn't afford anything BUT food.

My first place was mostly furnished with second hand stuff from family, friends, and even the odd piece I'd find out in the street.
My favorite place to shop was probably the streets of New York City the night before bulk pick up. You'd be amazed at the stuff people throw out.

In my very first apartment, my couch & kitchen table were given to me by my mom & her friend. I splurged on the mattress, but I can't remember what the name of the store was. I bought my coffee table & TV stand at Goodwill. The TV was just a 13" that my aunt had given me as a high school graduation present.
I still love to shop at Big Lots (Pick & Save in california), the $.99 store & the second hand/thrift stores.

well my first place was a duplex on an AF base, i just married my husband and we moved their, we bought a pink couch from the salvation army, a bunch of those tall lamps, a little entertainment center ($40) and my kitchen table from walmart, our bed was my husbands old bed from his parents house, and the 25" tv was mine from my parents house, all of my pots, pans, dishes, silverware were from walmart too, we have been married about 4 years now and i have all brand new furniture including my living room, dining room and bedroom, a 50" flat screen and a new super comfy mattress, i buy most of my decorations from pier 1 imports, but don't get me wrong we work very hard for all of our stuff and now we are buying our first house! everybody usually starts out small

Love Jerome's for furniture (they'll give credit to just about anyone hehe). Ross is a great store to get accessories, pillows, bedding, towels ect. I also like going to garage/yard sales in rich neighborhoods.

My favorite place to furnish my first place was Craigslist.com
Be patient and you will get amazing deals to furnish your place. Look in the free section occassionally too.

My first place was an apartment off campus while in college. My favorite place to shop for cool somewhat cheap furniture, etc. was/is Target!
