I'll be visiting Sydney 4 days, Melbourne 1 day, and Port Douglas 3 days.

Should I add 3 more days or so to my trip and include Gold Coast to visit Australia Zoo and one or two of the theme parks? or are the beaches of northern Queensland enough for such a short trip?

By all means add the 3 extra days.

You'll love the Gold Coast and Australia Zoo on the Sunshine Coast.

Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary on the Gold Coast is worth a visit too. I love it there.
Have a look at the website below.

Lorikeet feed -
Our lorikeet feeding is what made the sanctuary famous.
You can still experience the noisy and colourful flocks of wild lorikeets every day as they come in to feed.
The Lorikeets that feed at the sanctuary are completely wild. Numbers vary from day to day, depending on seasonal flowering of local food trees and the presence of predatory birds in the area.
Twice daily between 8.00am -9.30am & 4.00pm - 5.30pm.

It is going to be a very busy holiday, but I'm sure you'll be back. There is lots more to see here.
Have a wonderful time.

Add 3 days definitely.
We went to Bondi beach.nice & you can get there by ferry then take a bus as far as you want to go.
The Zoo is good & the Opera house tour is worth it.If you want to spurlge on 1 eatery go to "Doyles" just after dark. It's on the water and very nice.
If you haven't "booked" your accomodations here's a great tip ; In OZ and New zealand every town has a tourist trailer park. They are less than 1/2 what a motel would cost.
Some have full kitchens included in the price. You have to rent a car is the only drawback. We stayed in them in N.Z. & AU.,some of them included a qt. of milk in the price.
We visited some kinda lika a zoo just outside of Sydney that had parrott feedings(lorikeet) there were thousand that showed up on our head ,shoulders, arms. No fear of humans at all.
We bought a airline pass and went to Brisbane from there you can get a boatride to see the barrier reef.
Be carefull in this season they have the "Blue Jellyfish" it's a killer.
Goldcoast is OZ equivalent of Vegas although the beaches are nice there.
Don't have time....
Enjoy your trip ...Aussies luv Americans...

If you are going to Sydney for four days you will most likely go to Taronga Park zoo which is one of the two best zoos in Australia, the other is Melbourne zoo. Australia zoo doesn't come close and is very expensive. It isn't on the Gold Coast either which is south of Brisbane but on the Sunshine Coast which is north of Brisbane. Theme parks are theme parks if you like that sort of thing.

If you want to spend three extra days in Australia, fly to Alice Springs and explore the red centre including Uluru and Kata Tjuta. The area is unlike anything tou will see anywhere else in the world and the scenery is magnificent.

on your own or with a family the gold coast is great there is plenty for you to see and do... further up the coast is OK to but more of just surf rather than other activity's until you get right up to the great barrier reef... if you just after a bit of surfing you can hire surfboards on bondi beach in sydney and save on the wastered travailing time... good luck... have fun...
