In 1857, some Arkansas pioneers were travelling through Southern Utah on their way to California. Local settlers, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, harrassed them and eventually murdered most of them. It was rumored that the victims were from Missouri and had participated in the persecution of the Church when it was in Missouri. Some claimed that Gov. Boggs was in the group. Boggs ordered all Mormons to be murdered or evicted from Missouri. Boggs was not in the group. He had come west at the same time as the Mormons ten years earlier. Brigham Young sent a message to the area instructing the settlers to leave the pioneers alone. The message arrived a day late and the settlers had already committed the atrocity. One person was eventually executed for his part in the tragedy.

Under the Banner of Heaven is a book by Jon Krakauer that does an excellent job of answering this question as well as other questions regarding Mormon history. I do not agree with all of his views on religion in general, but his take on Mormonism is right on.

There was a bunch of shooting in Utah BUT WHO STARTED IT is a mystery some people say it was Mormons (even though we are AGAINST killing) some say it was Indians some say it was in self defense
