In Australia, the wines are usually cheaper in the Liquor Stores. In NSW there is an agreement between the Wineries and the Retailers Assoc to have the wines at Retail, cheaper than at the Wineries.
Nowadays, the Winery staff are paid part wage and part commission. The commission amount is usually the difference between the Retail price and Winery price.
At the winery you have the thrill of being there, meeting the winemaker and enjoying the ambiance.
At the Liquor Store you have the choose of range and service (sometimes)!

Big grocery stores will by in high vlomue from the wineries, usually at a significant saving. Sometime they pass these saving onto the customer. But they still have to make for overhead (cost of shipping, paying employees). So, you won't save too much on some wines, especially imports.
At the winery you could get significant savings if you join their wine club. You get more saving if you buy cases. Another good thing about wine clubs, is that they will offer special wines to their members that may not be offered to the general public.

you are more apt to find them cheaper at grocery store and/or liquor store than a winery. Wineries don't usually put things on sale to move inventory. regular stores do to try and move the product faster.
the only advantage to buying wine at a winery, is that often times wineries produce some wines that are only sold in their own tasting rooms.

Wine tends to be cheaper in a winery than the liquor stores. Plus, when you buy from the winery, you usually get to taste before you buy, and the people selling it to you are going to know more about the wine and be more helpful.

I haven't visited Chateau Lafite yet, but when I first went to Napa touring, I came back with a bunch of wine only to find that most of it was available at my local shop for less.
The wineries will tend to sell at full retial price, even though they are obviously saving the wholesaler, shipping, and storage costs. It's quite a racket really.
So my advice, buy some of the special release wines, that are not available at the local wine shop. This might require a little homework before visiting the wineries...

You get a better selection at a winery, as to variety and years of production. But, depending on each state, the price may be cheaper at a liquor store (fair trade, liquor laws).

It's cheap at the liquor store, but at least you won't get shot at the winery.

No - they don't like to upset their distributors, and people at the winery tend to be willing to pay more, since they get caught up in the moment

If you can, at the Winery. Locally a $6.95 winery bottle sells for $ 8.45 at the grocery.
