.rar files are compressed files, much like .zip files. The nicest utility that I've seen to decompress .rar files is winrar, which you can find at www.rarlab.com.

When you install this file, it SHOULD "assiciate" the .rar extension with itself, and you should be able to open rar files just by double clicking. If you don't, then you can select "Open With," and then select winrar.

If you want to manually associate .rar files with winrar, you can...but that's probably a better topic for another question. :-)

Control panel, Folder Options, then File Types. Go to the .rar extension and change the program that you want to open .rar files with.

If you mean you need a program to open .rar file, go to download.com and you'll find some free options. Windows doesn't have a .rar opener built in.

Use the open with again on the file and choose winrar archiver as the program....then check the box titled use this pororgram for all files of this type .... it might say something different.....

anyway hit ok on that then the file will open and any futer access of a rar file should load winrar and not fiirefox..

rar would be some type of zip program on your computer. either 7zip or winzip. Windows Xp can open ZIP files but not rar files. XP should have the closet matches at the top after you do the open with.
