I was on a call and I said "He won't be back until Monday either" and I pronounced it eyether. Then he had to repeat it as eether as if he were correcting me. Has anyone ever been corrected by a stranger when there are two pronunciation possiblities? Are you guilty of this?

Hmm... no, I usually stay clear of correcting strangers in those situations. If someone mispronounces something, I keep the conversation going and continue to slip the word into conversation, pronouncing it correctly, and hope they catch on.

To actually point out a mispronunciation is rude and awkward.

He's obviously a control freak.
Either is pronouced in both ways...they even wrote a song about it. LOL!
I've never had that happen. But I have corrected people over the phone only when it comes to pronoucing names of people. I think that is important and in most cases I was doing them a favor by correcting them. Since they are calling for a the big boss wanting our business or a job at our firm.

Perhaps he just repeated it back to you, to cofirm the facts, and just pronounced it the way he does, not to say it your way (since as you point out there are two pronunciations). I would never correct anyone else, but perhaps he was not correctiing you, either (or eyether)

as both of the pronunciations are correct, there is no need to insist on the use of one over the other by a stranger. that is just rude.

I correct strangers if they mispronounce the name of the person they're calling. It's for their own good, I do it kindly.
The fellow who corrected you was just showing himself, ignore that sort of thing. Somebody else can put him in his place - and they will.

No, I have never been corrected but I will correct them as sure as rain. Especially if they call me a Mrs. when I am not! ♥

I have never done this. And I just ignore them if they ever do this. And put my hand to them if they keep going that. I think its ease dropping when they do that.
