After seeing the Marines at school today, I have considering whether or not I should sign up. I am healthy and have no medical issues. So, what do you guys think about joining the military this late in the game. Stats: no kids, no husband, and live alone.

I am not running away from anything. More or less like a fall back thing, if I don't get into grad school.

Sorry to tell you, but unless your have prior military service.

You will not be allowed to enlist in the Marines, do to your age.

The only active duty service that allows 30 year olds to enlist, is the Army and Navy.

Below is the list of maximum age to enlist:

Active duty Army - 42
Army Reserves - 42
Army Natinal Guard - 42
Active duty Air Force - 27
Air Force Reserve - 34
Air National guard - 34
Active duty Navy - 34
Navy Reserves - 39
Active duty Marines - 28
Marine Corps Reserves - 29
Active duty Coast Guard - 27
Coast Guard Reserves - 27

Those individuals with prior military service, can generally get a wavier for up to four years over the age limit.

So go look at the Army or Navy if you want to go active duty.

We'd love to have you.

Well sunshine I put in my 20 and it was a great time and as for you join at 30 I think you would have to have some kind of special need that they could use and or prior service. Now if you was a nurse, Doctor the Navy, Army or AirForce would love to have you because you are already trained and they would have to get you in the military mind set. Same with the Army. The Marines use the Navy for all our medical needs, yes some jar heads do have some traing but for the most part it is Navy(which btw we are a part of the Navy or they are a part of us)LOL. Check with a local recruiter they could tell you more, if the Marine can't give you what you need check out the Navy, Army or Air Force. The AF also has their own medical field. Best of luck

Understand first and foremost, you are joining them they do not join you! You can get better job experience in some of the other service branch's and even some bonus money is proved when signing up for certain fields.
You have to expect the worst when joining the Corp. Getting through just boot camp is an experience you'll never forget and then to be a part of the USMC is a life long journey in many ways. Your not to old but I would suggest you get into shape if need be before joining. Good Luck!

Having served I think it's the best thing for someone who's not quite sure of what's next in life. It seemed to expose me to so many other possibilities especially if you go into a field that you are interested in ( get it in writing before you join ). I thought the age cut off was 32 but may have raised it. If you were looking at pilot training it's lower I think. Ask lot's of questions, talk to others who've been in and if you do join, get into great physical shape before you go. You'll get paid, have a place to live and get money for college if you have more to do. It was the best experience of my life. But check out the other branches as well. They may offer different opportunities.

if you were a man they would call you "the grand old man" of parris island or san diego.( this is a Marine saying and not derogatory for those of you who weren't Marines)
Honestly, thirty is a little old to put your self through the rigors of Marine boot camp. even if you are physically able, are you willing to swallow all your pride and treat the DI's with respect? they will be younger than you. also, even when you get to the fleet your first three years will be spent as a peon to kids literally 10 years younger than you.
i would recommend the air force for a late bloomer like yourself.
the Marine Corps is a young mans/woman's game unless you have been in for the duration.

30 is not old in this day and age..... the Army will enlist to 42 for first timers.

You need to think ahead though. The Marines are small and offer less positions and advancement. The others offer more. Quality of living is better, opportunity in regard to continuing education and opportunity in regard to using your degrees are better.

I know of a 32 year old who joined the Air Force back in 1989 when I joined. So it is possible.
