I have a 13 week old shih tzu that I got 2 weeks ago and the past two nights she seems extra thirsty. She gets up about every hour to go get a drink and then pee. She seems healthy. She is playing and eating but I'm getting worried that something might be wrong. We have a vet appt next week so I'll be sure to ask him but I was just seeing if anyone else had any ideas as to what may be wrong with her since this is my first dog.

Puppies have small organs i.e. stomach, bladder. They require frequent feedings/water. Much like an infant you can't expect for them to get enough daily nourishment off of only 2 general feedings. They require small feedings throughout the day. I'd say 3-4 is average and no more than 1/4 cup for your dog size. Remember that after they eat/drink within 15 mintues their body has already processed the food/water and they will be ready to go to the bathroom. As long as you time their feedings, you'll have the pup potty trained in no time!

We have a Shih Tzu who just turned six. When he was a puppy he did pretty much the same thing. He would drink water all the time and then have to go out. I would definitely mention it to the vet so they can check to make sure it is nothing with her kidneys causing the issue.

He may just be playing too hard and it is wearing him out. Heat can also make dogs more thirsty so that may be why. It doesn't seem like there's anything to be worried about but it's great that you'd take your dog to a vet to make sure.

When my dog was drinking like that and almost immediately peeing she had a bladder infection. She was fine in every other way. You might want to move the vet appt. up.

puppies tend to drink a lot of water - you need to cap that. let her drink the water after eating dinner, maybe even a half hour after dinner but pull the food and water up at least an hour before bed time. she'll figure it out. in the mean time ask your vet if there's anything going on with her kidneys and to do blood work on her. good luck.

I wouldn't worry so much, she is just thirsty. If you live where it is cold, and your heat is on, she may just be more thirsty from the dry air.
Watch how much she drinks, likehow often do you have to fill her water bowl, she may not be drinking as much as you think, plus as long as she is peeing good, she is alright

Take a look at the sodium content in her food. Different brands have different amounts. I notice my cats drink a lot more when they eat Iams, but don't seem half as thirsty if they're eating Purina One.

maybe too much salt in the diet, caffeine or caffeine like substance from chocolate, or diabetes, or a urinary infection,or something else.

chocolate is poisonous to dogs, i am not certain why, but it does affect the kidneys.

below is a link the the Merck Veterinary Manual, there is a pet owners edition but that would have to be purchased, the link below is an online text written for vets.

Is he taking any kind of medication? I know this is unrelated, but my dog is on prednisone for itching and he uses the bathroom all the time and drinks lots of water but it's because of the medicine.
It could be the type of dog food he is eating? Not sure what you are feeding him, but you never know these days with the last dog food recall. Good luck and let us know what you find out . Hope he is okay.
