I'm determined to get back on track with my toning and whatnot - but exercises like crunches & situps hurt my tailbone which is shocking with as much padding as I've got ...lol... but seriously - what other exercises are effective at strengthening my core?

Also, what toning exercises have you done for any part of the body that showed results quickly?

Going to a gym is out due to time and (mostly) money, so at home exercises are preferred.

Pilates is supposed to be very good at working the core. I have some Pilates DVDs and they are great to do at home. They also have a modified version of each exercise so you can still participate even if you have a delicate area. You don't need a bunch of fancy equipment either, but I do recommend some kind of mat since you'll be on the floor. You can get one at Walmart for $10 bucks or so.

Your local library might have some of the DVDs and videos they are talking about here. Then if you find that they are the ones you want then you can buy them. I always check these out first before spending the money.

Get a yoga dvd. Yoga (hatha) is the best and gentlest. It relaxes you and gets you in shape. Think it doesn't work? You might not like her, but check out Madonna's guns/body, all yoga.
I do yoga, spinning, weights, and I run. I am a nurse who values health, I see what unhealthy leads to.
Oh yeah, running is free. And effective.

lie flat on back, lift both legs straight up, keep feet together, have someone stand at your head and push your feet down to the ground. it's up to you to keep your feet from hitting the ground. sit back to back on a weight bench and reach around pass a 8 pound medicine ball back and forth from both sides as many times as you can for 3- 45 second intervals. six inch leg lifts
