KAL 007 was a series of errors. The pilot did not enter one turn point in his computer flight plan. The aircraft entered Soviet airspace twice. Both times it was tracked by Soviet radar. The last time an over zealous commander ordered fighters to shoot it down. This was done with visual contact to confirm that it indeed a civilian airliner and not a RC-135 out of Kadena AB, Okinawa, Japan. The RC-135's were always testing Soviet radar abilities. They would get close to Soviet airspace but would back off at the last minute. KAL 007 was in Soviet airspace for over 4 hours before it was shot down.

I was a Pilot stationed at Kadena AB at this time. I was sent to search for survivors and aircraft parts in the sea. Unfortunately, I never found either.

The Soviets executed the commander who ordered the air strike and the Commander of Soviet Air Forces East. They never accepted blame for this shoot down and blamed it on the Americans, even though it was a Korean Aircraft. One United States Congressman from Marietta, Georgia was killed among all the others.

The Russians thought it was a spy plane and shot it down despite the fact the Russian pilots had visual sighting and informed his superiors that it was a commercial air liner. You can decide if it was a tragic mistake or decided to make an example of any aircraft that "invaded Russian airspace". As for the Iranian jet liner shot down by a guided missile cruiser; it was a tragic mistake-the Iranians were short parts and had placed an F-14 (sold to Iran when the Shah was in power) into a civilian jet liner which made it appear to be an F-14 heading towards the ship on the radar, no visual sighting was possible as no US aircraft were available.

The Soviet air defense shot it down claiming that they thought it was a US RC-135 that they knew was operating near that area.

It was a tragic mistake on the part of the Soviet military. They were vilified for it by the US government until our military shot down an Iranian airliner by mistake a few years later, killing about 200 people.

Look for a movie called "Tailspin". I think it was an HBO production. It's all about that situation. We had to watch it in techschool. It was funny from our perspective. You certainly KNEW who talked when they made that movie. Silly RUlings...sheesh!
