Unfortanatly the military doesnt care the reasoning behind your leaving.
The punishement is jail time. You would have been smarting talking to your drill sgt. or possibly commanding officer.
Good luck in the situation you've created for yourself.

More then likely, you will get a field grade article 15, lose half your pay for two months, lose any rank you have, and maybe have to repeat BCT.

You could also be kicked out under other then honorable and not able to re-enlist for a certain ammount of time.

This is only if you go back before 30 days though.

If you are gone for more then 30, then you will lose all federal benifits and be placed on an FBI list and will be arrested even if you get caught J-Walking. Then you will be turned over to the military for punishment that will more then likely be the same as above but could possible be jail time, but not likely.

The reason does not matter. If you had a problem, you should have gone through the channels. Your family could have contacted the Red Cross or you could have talked to your unit Chaplin or requested to see your CO or even your Battalion Commander if it is that bad. The military will help you out. All you did is show you are not a team player and will leave your battle buddies on the line to fill the hole you made in the ranks.

How long were you awol? i personally was awol 3 times for a day a piece and i didnt get in a lot of trouble (for THOSE charges) AWOL will probably catch you an administrative discharge. If you actually Deserted (AWOL 30 days +), you would probably catch a few months in jail and get a discharge, probably a BCD. You will probably NOT get a dishonorable discharge, that is for rapists and murderers.

well i can tell you the army won't care what the reason was for, that's just the way they operate. And as far as the punishment, no they are not going to kill you for desertion although technically you are guilty.

You have two choices: turn yourself in or live life on the run. I wouldn't suggest the second choice since they will get you. They won't go out looking for you, but they won't have to either. Any time you apply for a legitimate job or get pulled over for speeding or whatever the case, there you'll be with a federal warrant out for you for being AWOL. But you can definitely plan to spend some time in custody and depending on your chain of command you probably won't be in the Army any longer especially going AWOL in basic training. And then it's hard enough to get a job being a veteran with an honorable discharge, it's next to impossible to get a good job with an other than honorable (OTH) discharge. You can get one, but it might not be good enough to even support yourself with. Best of luck to you.

It is up to your commanding general. The crime could be AWOL, which like mentioned could be as little as forfeiture of pay, time in the stockade, and a bad conduct discharge. However, this is considered war time, then the crime is considered desertion. This is punishable by Federal Jail Time and up to the death sentence. The last person to be convicted of desertion and executed was Private Eddie Slovak in World War ll. General Eisenhower turned down his request for leniency.

Since you say you haven't gone AWOL yet call home and get them to contact the Red Cross. They can get you leave to return home.

If you are in the Military and have a family problem so bad that you would think of going AWOL why not have that family contact the RED CROSS for you to be able to go home rather than disgrace yourself and possibly ruin you future? Mother of 3 on active duty...

Awol is not the answer. You could ruin your life if you don't get killed where you are. Hard decisions. Anyway go to a higher person and tell them what the situation is and hopefully a solution could be worked out. If not go to a comrade and find out if he knows anyone that could go and represent you in your issues with your family connections. Stay connected Dude.

If there is a genuine family emergency, then your family should work through the red cross.
Going AWOL is the absolute worst thing to do.

You should have asked your D.I. for permission to talk to your C.O. about your situation. Also your family could have contacted the Red Cross. If it was an emergency it could have been worked out but AWOL is never an option.

We don't care what the reasons are. There is top rate medical in boot camp and they have phones in emergencies for the crap at home. Have you been gone longer than 30 days now? If so you are now a deserter and that brings way more issues with it. Nice job.
