My loyalty lies with Dale Earnhardt. Though there are many over the ages that would qualify as well. And you are entitled to your opinion as well. I still think if I had to choose now, it would be (UGGGHHH, I hate to say it) Gordon.
Go Jr.>>>>

Gordon's good, but he's not the best. Tony Stewart, Kyle Busch (god it kills me to say that), and Jimmie Johnson have at least as much talent as Gordon. Plus, Dale Earnhardt Jr. is better than this season has shown. If he got the points for where he was running when he blew up in each race this season (instead of where the blown engine dropped him to), he'd have gone into the chase second in points.

Jeff Gordon is the best active NASCAR driver, it's very difficult to dispute that. Don't give me that Jimmie Johnson spiel about his stats compared to Jeff's. In 10 years, Jimmie Johnson will be the best active driver.
Comparing Gordon, Earnhardt, and Petty is next to impossible. Petty raced several times per week, with extremely loose rules and limited competition. Still, 200 wins is absolutely amazing.
Dale Sr.'s seven championships under the old points format speak for themselves.
Jeff Gordon can't be compared by means of championships, because they're under a different scoring system.
It's safe to say that they're the top three drivers in history, but even that's questionable with names like David Pearson and Cale Yarborough.

We miss probably one of the greatest comebacks in Nascar history. The Summer race at Tally. When all wanted to follow the draft, Gordon got out with 10 or so to go, and won. Although it was a white green checkered. Thats a great driver.

At the moment, I'd say yes. I believe he may hang on long enough to grab more than 105 wins (which would put him in 2nd all-time). In terms on titles, I can't see him doing better than tying Petty and Earnhardt at 7.
Johnson is making a VERY serious run at Gordon, but needs to keep this mad pace for at least 3-5 more years. Stewart has that same capability, but he may have started too late and will just end up being one of the top 5 of his era.
Junior will have to get his butt in serious gear, or he will be no better than top 5-10 of his era (which still isn't shabby).
Edwards, Kahne, Shrub, and Hamlin also have this capability, but they're going to need to string together several 5+ win seasons and one crazy 10+ victory season to merit serious consideration. All are quite capable.
Allmendinger is young enough now (that's what also helps Shrub) to have plenty of time to achieve greatness- but these guys need to learn to manage a race and not beat the puddin' out of the car on lap 2. Kyle is gettig better at it. AJ is overly fearless.

man, you are dead on! yep this year woulda been Jeff's 6th cup by the old points system and he still has a bunch of good years left to go. the only record i don't see Jeff breaking is Petty's 200 wins. if we had as many races now as petty did when he was racing (45+ races a year) then Jeff definitely would have broken Petty's record of 13 wins in a season in '98 and he would have had a shot at the 200 win mark. but in the end when Jeff finally retires i think his numbers will be something like this:1st all-time cup championships 8 and 2nd all-time wins 132

Jeff Gordon, "statistically" is the best, or at least will become the best. He is the only one with a real chance win the most championships.
As for ever passing Petty's wins...no one will, but then again, Petty had corporate backing in sponsors (STP, Chrysler, etc..) when all others in Nascar had "Bob's tires", or what have you. So, obviously, I would hope he would have the most wins.
By the way: Go Kenseth !!

They don't call Richard Petty the King for nothing! But when it comes down to it, Jeff Gorden has got to be the best I've seen in the last 10 yrs.
The old timers all had their day, and were absolutely wonderful. But records needed to be broken, & Gorden has done that, & will continue to the best of his ability.
And I'm not a Gorden fan.But when someone is that good it's had to ignore.
It's hard to predict who else will perform, but Johnson driving for Gorden & HMS,it's a hard team to beat. Now that JR. is driving for HMS, can't wait to see how much better he does.

I believe that thee best driver in Nascar Dale Earnhardt is racing on that golden track in heaven. He was the best when he was alive and he will continue to be the best even though he's no longer with us. Watch out for Dale Jr though because I believe that he's on his way to becoming one of the best now that he's no longer under contract with his step mother. I beleive he will make a name for himself next year with Hendrick.

Ever: David Pearson
Modern Era: Dale Earnhardt Sr (but Gordon is catching him fast)
Now: Jimmie Johnson (ALL the stats favor him as far as wins, top 5s, top 10s and money earned over the last 6 years)
